The people who actually own the house are older and actually have jobs and attempt to make ends meet and be contributing members of society. They've borrowed money several times though, when they've gotten in a bind, and have never repaid any of it (close to $1,000). DH and I both agreed that we wouldn't "loan" them any more money or give them any.
Their 35 year old son occasionally sleeps on their couch for several weeks at a time. He has two kids by two women who are absolute terrors. He comes over at least once a month, telling us he has no money and needs $10-20 to buy food for his kids (lit cigarette in hand, mind you).
He came over yesterday and I flat out refused to let DH give hi money. I would bet my house he has never spent that money on food (we have offered him cereal, milk, granola bars, fruit, veggies, etc. in the past and he has pushed for just cash). Probably 75% of the time we tell him we have no cash on us and turn him down, but we've probably given him a couple hundred as well over the course of time.
It's so frustrating! I really want to scream in his face and tell him what a piece of trash he is and to go find a job instead of mooching off everyone, sucking his parents dry, and using his kids to get money from other people.
How would you handle this?
