Hello ladies,

My husband and I recently found out our little bun is a girl, and now we are trying to decide on a name. We have a couple contenders but I am really torn! Our current thoughts: Kaylee Rose or Eleanor Marlow. Our last name has two syllables. Hubby prefers Kaylee, which I like, but I've also imagined having a little Eleanor for years. Marlow is also a family name on my side, so hubby's offered Kaylee Marlow as a compromise. I have some hesitations about the popularity of Kaylee. Since I go back and forth every 10 seconds, I'm putting it out there for other opinions!

Would Kaylee be the name or a nickname? The only Kaylee I know is a Kathleen. I think Kathleen Eleanor has a pretty ring to it

I like Kaylee Marlow, but would spell Kaylee differently. Perhaps Kailey?

I agree on the spelling. I'd do Kayleigh or Kailey, I think. Though I have a niece named Raylee. (In her case it was SIL's parents middle names put together, Ray and Lee.)

Eleanor seems much more classic. Kaylee is cute for a little girl, but imagine a 45 year old lawyer named Kaylee.

I voted Eleanor...but that's my DD's name so I'm biased!

Not a fan of Kaylee, but love Eleanor! Eleanor Marlow and Eleanor Rose sound great!

I actually love the combo of Eleanor Rose, but I wasn't sure about ending a name in -r and starting the next one with R. I also hear what some people are saying about Kaylee being a cute name for a little girl, but I've met adult Kaylee/Kailey/Kaeli's before and never thought it a childish name on a grown woman. As far as the spelling goes, we would probably stick with Kaylee as I wrote it. I'm not a huge fan of the Kailey spelling, and I have a relative with the middle name Leigh, but we have a complicated relationship and would rather not have that reminder when saying/spelling my kid's name 100x a day.

For those who already have kids, did you have a sense of what name fit your baby best before he/she was born? Little girl is very active and feisty, which makes me sometimes lean more toward Kaylee as fitting the spirit of what I know of her so far, but that might be totally silly given that all I know is that she kicks a lot and was moving constantly during her anatomy scan. I think hubby is also really hoping to name her Kaylee, since he was not-so-secretly hoping for a boy and was a tad bit disappointed to learn she's a girl....guess I feel a little bad if I get the gender I was kind of hoping for and the name I want more. Does that make any sense?

I'd go with Eleanor or Cailey instead of the K, I'm not big on the popularity of K's. My cousin is a badass adult Cailey and we just met a nurse with the same name today.

I'm surprised at all the hate for Kaylee. And someone saying it sounds like a made up name? Ok.......you realize all names were made up at some point, right? And that Kaylee, however you spell it, is not a new name? I can't just throw it out of contention because I'm not making the name decision solo, and I don't hate it - just don't like it as much as Eleanor. Thanks for the feedback, and for the reminder of why we aren't telling friends/family our picks until she's actually born!!

Here Eleanor is much more popular than Kaylee. I know three Eleanors born in the past 2 years and I don't know any Kaylees. And I'm a teacher!

I prefer Eleanor to Kaylee. There were lots of girls named Kaylee (spelled many ways) in my schools, so to me it seems more like a trendy name. I prefer classic names.

@badwolf: I think your child's name is your child's name and you shouldn't let anyone make that decision for you. I think Kaylee is a fine name. I prefer Eleanor, but that's just MY preference. You're the one who has to say her name for the rest of your life, not us. But you did come to an open forum and ask for opinions, and you know what they say about opinions....

Ha. Amen to not sharing names until the birth!! At least here, you're getting unbiased responses. I'm not sure if anyone here knows you IRL, so they're just responding to the name itself.

Personally, I LOVE Eleanor Rose! I imagine a feisty nickname of Ellie or E, even Rosie when she's younger. As an adult, Ellie, Elle, or Eleanor. It's a classic, and beautiful name. To me, Kaylee is trendy, and that's not our style.

@badwolf: Kaylee and Eleanor are very different styles. Kaylee is personally not my style. Eleanor seems much more classic and versatile. But this feedback is valuable--if you feel very defensive about the name Kaylee, maybe you like it more than you realized!

I would also consider sibling names if you might have more than one child. Do you tend to like names that are more like Kaylee or that are more like Eleanor? Perhaps one is a stylistic outlier for you, and that should be taken into consideration.

Would you use Marlow as a first name?

As pp mentioned Kaylee & Eleanor are just tooootally different styles. Kaylee feels very trendy to me whereas Eleanor is more classic... I think it depends on what style you're leaning towards. I personally prefer Eleanor but I like classic names much more and think it would age better. That's just my personal preference but Kaylee is fine too!

I'm in a bit of a similar predicament as you - my husband looooves one name and I kinda want to give it to him but i just don't love it as much as he does and have another one in mind. But I'm really struggling with that so I totally get where you're coming from.

@badwolf: love Kaylee and I'm guessing you picked it based on a certain Joss Wedon series we would have seriously considered it but we had a dog we fostered for 6 mo we named Kaylee (ended up not keeping her since she am had aggression issues, long story) and felt funny using for an LO! One of our other dogs is named Malcolm Reynolds (his tag reads Cpt Malcolm). And if that's not why you like Kaylee then I've outed myself as a giant nerd...

I love the name Eleanor Marlow. I even love Marlow for a first name.

I'm not a fan of Kaylee at all. It doesn't pass the artist/senator test in my book. Senator Kaylee? Nope.

@loki: I actually can't use Marlow as a first name because it's my maiden name, and I hyphenated my last name with my husband's...so if I named her Marlow Lastname, she'd have my legal last name for her whole name! That would get confusing, I think. As for the other part, thank you!! So glad someone gets the issue! I feel like I shot down so many of hubby's ideas when we were still just throwing out ideas for various reasons, and I don't want to be an ass and him feel like he didn't have any say. It's a difficult spot.

General reply: I am definitely aware that I am sensitive to perceived criticism/disapproval/whatever you want to call it. It's a thing, I'm working on it I appreciate the responses, even if I get defensive.

I think you should go with Eleanor since that's the one that's been on your heart for years, and whatever your hubby's top pick for the middle name is.

@badwolf: I like either name with Rose as the middle name. Marlow in the middle is a mouthful.

Since he was hoping for a boy is he really vested in picking a girl's name? Maybe there's something else you can compromise on? I imagine you've been dreaming of girl names longer than he has so I think you get dibs.
