I don't go to term so my babies are small. She wore newborn for a few months.

My first never wore NB, my second only wore it for a week.

Well I only had about 3 newborn sized sleepers (which fit for about a month) so other than those I used 0-3 from the beginning. Some started out baggy, and a few still fit now at 5 months. If I have another baby I don't plan to get any additional newborn outfits.

DS was 8lbs5oz/21in and was in newborn for the first month, with some overlap in either direction. My MIL told me I wouldn't need any newborn stuff so I had almost nothing - DH had to run out a few times to get sleepers and I ordered some extra stuff online, too. As you've noticed, some brands run small so the 0-3 sizes would really be newborn most places. We had a couple of Splendid onesies that I got at TJ Maxx or something that seemed to run small. BabyGap, on the other hand, seemed to run a little big so he was wearing some of their NB stuff up to 5-6 weeks.

C was just over 8 lbs at birth but she was in some NB for over a month, maybe 2? Like you said it varies wildly by brand (and even within brand, with Carter's). So sorting by the visual size is smart instead of just what it says on the label.

Gerber runs really small so I had good luck with a 5 pack of 0-3 onesies in bright colors, before she fit into any other 0-3 stuff. She mostly wore those and a swaddle.

I wouldn't register for much in the way of clothes. It's easy and cheap enough to run out (well, send your so) to get more if you need it. There will probably be plenty of other things you are sending them out for anyway!

Oh and just FYI side snap long sleeve tops were the best for the first week or two- so much easier than putting a onesies over the wobbly head. We saved actual clothes for when we had guests.

My LO was 6lbs 5 ounces at birth and spent 3 months in newborn clothing. I believe he spent 3/4 months afterward is 0-3/3 month clothing (pants a whole lot longer).

My baby was in newborn clothes about 5-6 weeks, (born 7 lb 1 oz) then wore 0-3 months maybe just a few weeks until she was in 3 month clothes.

DS was born at 6lb. 14oz. He wore newborn for 3 weeks and 0-3 for about 6 weeks. It did depend on size but not by much. Gerber he grew out of first and everything else was 1-2 weeks later.

Newborn will be probably.. 2 weeks here? She was born at 9lbs1oz and just shy of 22" so some newborn sleepers are already too small. Onesies are just fitting her (4days old). My son who was a bit smaller at 8lbs 5oz, 22" fit newborn for closer to a month.

LO was a preemie so she was in newborn for a while, but she got big enough for 0-3 right at her due date so I expect we could have skipped them entirely of she'd been term. Some of the bigger nb stuff still fits at a week past her due date, but not much. But she was on track to be a big baby.

My son was a big baby and he wore bulky cloth diapers, so our small selection of newborn outfits were never worn! You may have some idea of the baby's size towards the end of your pregnancy if you have any late ultrasounds. We knew ours was looking big, so we were very conservative about buying nb stuff. We also left the tags on all but one nb item, which allowed us to exchange those items.

@bluestriped bee: She was actually never in preemie clothes. For one thing, all the ones we had (which we actually bought when R was supposed to be a preemie; we weren't planning on it for L!) were crazy tiny. Newborn clothes were very big on her, but the gap between the preemie size and newborn was huge. She was around 5.5lb when she was born, so she just never needed super tiny clothes. But also she didn't wear any clothes until she was 10 days old. She was just in a diaper and usually a swaddle at first. So even if she'd fit in the preemie stuff initially, she might have outgrown it before she needed anything.

My first never fit into newborn cloths and my second was in them for quite a while at least a month. It is very dependent on the brand though.

DD measured huge in utero, so the OBGYN told us not to bother with newborn. She was 8 pounds 11, but very chunky and so starting at 0-3 wasn't a bad idea but she then lost way more weight than expected and so was in NB for about 3 months.

Because we'd passed the no NB message on, we only had 2 NB outfits, so we just put her in 0-3, which she swam in!

Agree with @sapphire: that I wouldn't worry about NB onesies too much. Well, I guess everyone is different - but for me, as a newborn, I really didn't want to put anything over his head. He hated being changed and it just felt stressful to try and squeeze a newborns head through a onesie. So until about 4/5 weeks he was only in the kimono style white t-shirts and footed sleepers. I used NONE of his newborn onesies. Was sad when I realized they didn't fit and he never wore one.

@BandDmommy: oh, good to know. Can I ask you how big your son was when he was born? At 31 weeks, my babies are measuring around 3 lbs. We are hoping they make it to 34 weeks and will be around 4 lbs or more when they deliver.

Wow! I am 39w tomorrow and now I am concerned because I have almost no NB size stuff! Mostly 0-3 months. I have about 3 NB sleepers and maybe 2 onesies? Yikes. I had an u/s at 36 weeks which showed about average size, and my OB doesn't think baby will be huge. Sounds like I may need some more NB clothes!

i only received/bought 0-3 mo and in retrospect, i could've bought a few NB pieces- she was small for 0-3 mo clothing (8 lbs 1 oz at birth) but by the time we brought her home i just opted to save money and make it work. i dried some things on high heat which helped i mainly have things from target/gap and the circo/target onesies shrunk more/fit better while the gap onesies are still a little roomy at 7.5 wks and roughly 10.5 lbs.
