We have a crib, dresser, changing table that also has 2 shelves of storage underneath. Thats all the furniture we have so far. I dont think will get anymore furniture for a while. I plan to get a book shelf later on

We have a crib, dresser/changer and a nightstand in the room and some cube shelves in the closet. We'll use the cube shelves to keep outfits of various ages/sizes sorted right now, and later on they'll be used for toys and books.

For furniture we have a crib, dresser, and changing table with storage. I also have a glider which I love, but could live without if I had to.
I think clothes depends on where you live and the season. My lo was a newborn in summer so she just needed some onesies.

crib, dresser, changing pad, glider, and white noise machine are essentials for us.
you can do without a diaper pail, and anything decorative isn't an essential.

Crib, dresser with changing pad, and glider. Oh, and a nightlight Diaper pail was a waste of space!

Crib, dresser, glider, change pad, lamp/dimmer = essential
Anything else is extra and are nice to have but not necessary.

We need our diaper pail. But we use cloth so we can't just toss the dirty diapers every night. And we just got a cheap one.

Crib, dresser, changing pad on top of dresser (also on dresser a supply of things like diapers, cream, thermometer, etc), diaper pail, glider, table besides the glider so you have somewhere to put stuff when you're sitting, baby camera, clock, sleep sheep sound machine, and black out curtains.
We also have a bookshelf with all her books, an armoire since her room has no closet, and pictures on the walls but the stuff above are the essentials.

@tequiero21: A glider is basically a type of rocking chair but it has a gliding mechanism so its smoother than a rocking chair. Its great for putting babies to sleep.
Here is one

When it comes down to it, all you need is a safe place for LO to sleep and maybe a comfy place to nurse/feed your LO but here's what we have in our nursery:
-Crib + mattress (just sheets + dust ruffle, no other bed linens)
-Dresser (although I could have easily put all her clothes in the closet too)
-Changing station (re-purposed from a desk)
-Rocker/recliner (to nurse baby and to sleep in occasionally when she was a newborn)
-Side table for rocker
-Black-out curtains
-Hamper for her dirty clothes (completely unnecessary)
-Small (1 ft tall) lidded trash can (which we have now removed from the room since she can now open it)
-Night light
-Ceramic heater with temperature control set for 70 degrees (for cold nights; Also nice cause I don't have to mess with blankets or sleep sacks)
-Humidifier (cause the above heater {any, really} dries the air and her skin)

I plan on (based on all my friends having kids) a dresser, convertible crib, changing table with shelf space (would've been a 36 in tall bookcase, but the changing tables are cheaper), and a nightlight. I'm also having a rocking chair - would've preferred a glider, but my rocker is a since-we-came-from-Europe hand-me-down, with a 4th generation blankie from Greece (well, my great-great aunt got it there, and I was the next owner.)
