How exciting! Another NYC Bee!
I think it all depends on your budget. There are so many family-friendly neighborhoods and buildings. The Upper West and Upper East sides are full of young families and the close proximity to Central Park is amazing. But, it can be quite pricey there.
Brooklyn is also filled to the brim with young families. It's so charming there, I absolutely love it. We lived in Brooklyn Heights for 8 years and I loved every moment. If we had all the money in the world, I would buy a Heights brownstone, send my kids to Packer Collegiate (the local private school), and never leave!
However, once LO came along we knew we needed more space and more affordable childcare. So we packed up and moved to Astoria, Queens. It's definitely not nearly as charming and idyllic as Brooklyn but it's very convenient to our jobs in Manhattan, there are many affordable daycares, and we are able to rent a three bedroom house with a parking space for less money than our previous one bedroom was costing us. Plus, Queens has so much diversity, it's truly incredible. I find it to be much more "authentic" than Brooklyn which was becoming so gentrified.
Good luck with your move!

I've lived in New York all my life, Brooklyn namely. I loves
It as a child, a teenager, a wild 20s girl and now as a wife and mother of 2 little ones. There is something for everyone no matter your age, your lifestyle, etc. you grow with NYC and NYC grows with you.
There's great food to be had. Lots of diversity and contrary to
How the media portrays people are generally pretty nice to
One another here. I feel like I get to give my children a great cultural lesson and experience just by walking the streets. There's so much to do when it's warm but even when it's cold it's still
Very fun and festive.
But it's not a perfect city. It gets extremely crowded.
Anywhere that's worth going is most definitely going to get mobbed. public transportation is great but I've always hated traveling on it with kids because it's congested, not always the cleanest and people can be kind of crazy. With all the gear that needs to travel
With you when you leave the house with 2 kids it's such a headache. Owning a car can costs you a small fortune and parking can be a nightmare. Childcare is expensive and competitive.
But New York needs to be experienced. It's A great opportunity and if you try it and it doesn't work hopefully you'll get to go home again.
