FYI -- Just in case anyone else is in my predicament I thought I'd follow up with our findings. Re: umbrella strollers we vastly preferred the G-Luxe lite to the Maclaren Triumph or Quest... but I didn't get to see any of the lower cost ones that I had researched, which meant that we were basically comparing those 3 really expensive strollers against the $17 umbrella strollers.

But something interesting that came up while we were looking was the fact that my kiddo is about to outgrow his baby carseat -- I know he's nowhere near the 30 lb weight limit, but he is rapidly approaching the 30" limit. What's next, I asked? A convertible car seat. The guy at Babies R Us seemed confused when I asked which is best for taxis -- you just leave it in your car, I said. ("But what about when we need to take a taxi to the airport?" "You just leave it in your car." Uhh, thanks.) Then I found a really scary thread on UrbanBaby where parents all admitted to just getting in taxis, putting the kid on their lap, and buckling them both in.

Finally I found this thread on the CarSeatLady http://www.thecarseatlady.com/taxis/using_taxis_2.html which suggests that the Combi Coccoro convertible car seat can be used with the Snap n Go Universal stroller. So... since I'm still freaked out about the possibility of having to deal with subway stairs and a stroller, now I'm thinking of just getting this and then getting a cheap umbrella stroller.
