I had a midwife at a birth center (actually a midwife and another student midwife). I loved having women there and knowing that they understood what I was experiencing. Feeling so supported by other women was one of my favorite things about the birth experience.

I have to go with OB for medical reasons as well as having a c section.
I would however if I could LOVE to do a unmedicated vag water birth with a midwife if I could.

I am THRILLED with my experience with my midwife so far. She has been my gyn for years, so it was only natural that I continued with her once I got pregnant. She practices with 2 other midwives and a group of OBs. As her gyn patient, you can transfer to the OBs at any time during your pregnancy (beginning, middle or just for delivery) if you want.
However, I'm staying with her the entire time.
I am surprised at how many people think that midwives only do non-medicated non-hospital births.
I am having a medicated, hospital birth, with my midwife. The reason I like her is the support she has given me and my husband during the pregnancy. Our appointments are as long as I need them to be. She always answers all of my questions, and then spends time going over even more information that I didn't ask about. She wants to know what I want for my pregnancy and birth, and does her best to support that. She still believes in all of the medicated ways, but would be open to all-natural if that is what I wanted.
I just feel like more of a "person" and a mom-to-be with my midwife, rather than a patient or a number.

I had a Registered Midwife for both my girls, the same clinic but a different midwife. In my province they are covered the same as an OB and have 5 years training in normal pregnancies and deliveries...so to me that makes them the experts! I felt so well taken care of. Hospital birth, both times.

OB/GYN. I have been going to her since I was 18 and I love her and trust her. She is an amazing doctor and was so supportive in all of our decisions during the pregnancy. I think that I found a rare doctor, because there are so many people who give OB's a bad rap on the internet, I never felt pressure from my doctor on any issue. Although, she did ask us at one appointment if we planned on breast feeding and was relieved when I said yes. She said that she was going to lecture me if I had said no.

I went with an OB this time b/c it was the path of least resistance. I think next time around I would prefer to go with a midwife though.

@MamaLove: My point was that I would want my same doc to be the one that was cutting, if cutting were to be needed... and at least at this point, midwives can't do that.

@Mrs. Jacks: True, they can't. Mine has surgical approvals and she assists in a c-section, if necessary. But some have to turn their patient over to OBs 100% in the case of a c-section.
And I completely understand those who want an OB. I was just surprised that people think midwives only do natural, un-medicated. There are plenty of midwives that practice in a hospital setting, with interventions, as needed or requested. That's all!
