A friend just informed me that our mutual friend finds the fact that I named my baby an Arabic name without being Arabic to be offensive. What? She's not even Arabic. I must admit I hardly know anything about cultures. Are we only supposed to use names in our own culture? Why do people like to be negative after we've named her? Ugh!

Gahd! A name is just some letters strung together, how can it belong to one culture over another. What an idiot. although names can be more popular in one culture than another it doesn't mean it can't be used elsewhere.

Everyone is going to have an opinion. You could pick the most simple, classic name and someone would wonder why you didn't pick something more unique!! You really can't win, but as long as you and your DH love the name, that's all that matters. STFU to everyone else

I think the only way names are offensive are if they co opt from religious beliefs that the parents don't follow, ie naming your child Jesus/Mohammed/Ganesh if you're not Christian/Muslim/Hindu etc. But that's just my opinion.

Agreed. You friend needs to step off. My son has a Scandinavian name and we aren't Scandinavian but we love the name. People need yo stop finding so many ways to be divisive. We are all one.
