Aaand that's why we went out of town

I'm no help, obviously.

I always gave my grandma a card, spent the morning with my mom and DH and I did something in the evening. I use to drop a bouquet and card off to my MIL but she has her own daughters that can spend time with her (and to me, she's not a mother figure in any way).

It's all about me! They're grandma now - I'm mom! lol

If my mom lived near me I would go see her - I definitely feel like its more special to her than to me! My kids are young and to me its just another day!

I wanted a day to myself but then I remembered mom's mom passed away in November so I wanted to make sure she was with family this year. She and Dad are coming to us, I'm taking her out for a mani/pedi and she'll enjoy time with our lo.

Honestly? Mother's Day in our house isn't really about anyone. I'm going to be at a work conference several states away. I love having a very small token of appreciation--like a card, but that is all.

I feel very lucky that in my family (both my own family and the family I married into), holidays are not these expectation-laden days where an entire day needs to be "all about" anyone. We enjoy birthdays and national holidays and things like mother's day, but with about 10% of the effort and planning and ritual-keeping and infighting and power plays as seems to be common in the U.S. these days.

I don't think my mom ever got anything on Mother's day except for maybe "breakfast in bed", which was not even a Pinterest-worthy endeavor (thankfully, I grew up before Pinterest). Most years, it was just cereal in a bowl, with toast and a glass of orange juice since that's how the cereal commercials always did it. Now days, she gets a phone call or if there's something I already wanted to give her, then I gift it. But I don't feel like I have to find something to give her just because it's Mother's Day.

I'm fine with the same type of thing. I would have 0 problem "sharing" my mother's day with either one of our mothers.

I still don't feel like mothers day is for me- even though I have LO. I planned a brunch with my mom and dad and my little family (we are going to tell them we are expecting another) and we are seeing MIL on either Sat night for dinner or Sunday night for dinner. Its up to DH to make those plans with his mom since she hates me.

We don't live near either of our families so it will be all about me : )

But quite honestly it will be all about last minute prep to leave town in the middle of next week!

We live overseas so I get it to myself When we do eventually move back though, I imagine we'll have the morning at home and go see one of the grandmothers in the afternoon, and probably see the other one the night before.

I usually celebrate with different people on different days of that week. On the day of I am saving dinner time for myself with my own little family. My MIL is deceased but we usually have brunch with DH's aunt who helped raised him on Mother's Day. Saturday night we will spend it with my side.

My parents don't live near us so we won't see them, however they'll be with mom's family and we'll FaceTime so everyone can see the baby.

As it turns out, this year we'll see MIL on Saturday and I guess Sunday will be "my" day. I was totally fine sharing, I didn't want MIL to not get to see one of her sons on Mother's day because it's my first mother's day and it had to be about me. But she's doing something with BIL so we'll see her Saturday. I have no idea what DH and I will do for me. Honestly, letting me sleep in and a card is sufficient.

This year, my first as a Mum, we made it about our family (DH, LO & I) and didn't see either of our Mums.

I've realized that one of the perks to living in another country is that the holidays sometimes don't coincide with each other. We celebrate American Mother's Day how I want because Swedish Mother's Day is 2 weeks later! Woot!

I'm actually kind of bummed about it but I feel rotten for it so I'm trying to focus on how thankful I am to have our moms to celebrate with. We're doing lunch on Mother's Day with my mom and dinner at MIL's house. I was hoping that we could have a "family day" (JUST DH, me and the kids) on Saturday but then we found out that BIL is graduating from college on Saturday so that day is going to (understandably) be all about him.

A lady on the radio summed it up for me really well this morning. She said that she feels so busy in the day to day of everything with kids' activities, work, etc that she doesn't get time to just stop being "on" and just enjoy being a mom/her kids. I feel like MD is going to be just shuttling ourselves/kids around, trying to sneak in naps....when all I really want is to just relax and enjoy them!

It's all about my mom and my MIL. Blah...

I would also love to have a day to just enjoy my little guy, but I always host Mother's day with my ILs, my parents (Oh, who by the way hate each other), my siblings and their SO's parents. So it's a full house AT my house and I'm usually doing all of the cooking/cleanup. My DH tries really hard to get me to relax, but it's definitely difficult when you're hosting.

This is what upsets me so much - I want to spend time with all the moms! I could care less about me, so that makes it a little easier. We're spending this Mother's Day driving 2+ hours to Western Kansas (wooo) to spend the day with DH's grandmother. It's really for her birthday, but it's going to be a big combo Mother's Day.

But usually, it's been about DH's mom (since I don't live near my family). The kids make lunch or dinner for her. Usually grilling, so me and SIL can get in on a little of the pampered action. Then the men serve and clean up.

I should add that DH asked when Mother's day is.

We do a brunch on Saturday and we spend Sunday alone as a family.

I would like for it to be about me. My family understands and recognizes it, but my in-laws don't. We try to split it as best we can, but really, I'd like to tell them that it's MY day and I don't feel like driving all over town... especially since we have a 7 week old this time who hates the car.

Usually I make time to see my mom. This generally means doing something with MIL in the AM, and something with my mom in the PM. But this year we totally blanked and scheduled a vacation! Whoops! Well at least we aren't going to see one but not the other! Because we are spending money to be at the beach I told DH no meal out or gift.
