Is there something in your life that seems only on HB and not IRL?!
Ex: DD has a bedtime of 7:00-7:30
With everyone IRL they think it is crazy early and comment all the time, she is 13 months
But on HB it seems normal!

I know almost no one IRL that cloth diapers- like I have 2 fb friends and that's it. Most people never even considered it at all.
I also know very few people who breastfed past 13-14 months and just about no one who went until 2.
I don't think I know anyone with a RF toddler getting close to 3. Most turned shortly before their 2nd birthday if not sooner. I was the last hold out at almost 2.5.

Same with the bedtime! And in my area, still breastfeeding past the first couple of months or at all.

We're the only family at preschool still rear facing our three year old. I'm also the only one that takes off her puffy coat to go in the car.
I was talking about it with the other moms and was shocked about how many knew about puffy coats but just couldn't be bothered.
nectarine / 2148 posts
I don't know any stay at home moms. I know some that work part-time but none that don't work at all.
A general impression I see from HB are so many people that follow strict parenting rules or are crunchy (I hate that word, but can't think of another one to describe it). I don't know anyone like that.
ETA: This includes nap schedules, no screen time, eating habits.
pomegranate / 3845 posts
The names! HB has some very trendy names. Everyone I know picks pretty traditional names!
pear / 1593 posts
I don't know anyone who is religious about nap schedules IRL (myself included)
pomelo / 5258 posts
Having a parenting style or philosophy. Everyone I know IRL is just making it up day by day.
Babywearing. Most people own a carrier but rarely use it.
pomegranate / 3858 posts
@oliviaoblivia: ditto, we're the only ones who rear faced past 1 in our circle of friends. They all think I'm crazy - even my engineer friend who doesn't believe that car seats expire
honeydew / 7444 posts
Strict adherence to car seat belts and extended rear facing.
PBK anywhere chairs, but that might be because I'm in Canada and it's so pricey once you factor in shipping and exchange rate.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
People not doing Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, etc with their kids. I've never met anyone outside of HB that doesn't let their kids believe.
pear / 1503 posts
The biggest one for us is cloth diapering. I only know of the sisters of two friends who have CD IRL. I've never even met them, so I guess I don't really know them. Lol!
Most of my friends and family formula feed (despite the fact that BF is very normal in Canada), although I have one cousin who is still BF at 26 months. She's a SAHM, and also EBF her older daughter.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
Oh - thought of another. People who are super restrictive of screen time.

Pumping at work. Its probably a mixture of our year-long mat leave policy and the fact that the official NHS guidance is to breastfeed for 6 months, but Id never heard of pumping breastmilk at work before I joined HB and, in 14 years in the workplace, I've never ever known it happen.
pomegranate / 3212 posts
@BandDmommy: totally on anti Santa. Also anti-Halloween. I had never heard of that before!

Lots of references to "two under two" & "three under four" & "soloing", car seat fanatics and toddler baby wearing !
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
Rear-facing past one. Almost everyone I know turns their kids after their first birthday and I can't think of anyone who kept them RF until 2. I'm sure most people think I'm extreme for still RF at 26 months.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Not circumcising, extended RF, extended BF, cloth diapering, etc are things that aren't really common around here.
nectarine / 2951 posts
This is a fascinating post!!
PS. I didn't know what an "anywhere chair" was, but after googling realized that we actually have one (a gift from the shower).
@ Cherrybee: pumping at work is real, especially in the US!!we rear faced until 2, it's actually a law now in NJ.
I don't have any IRL friends that cloth diaper. I also don't have many friends that are SAHM, but I think that is because I live near NYC and most families need 2 incomes, and women have kids later (in 30s) so they have an established career worth returning to.
papaya / 10570 posts
@mrsjyw: Ahh, completely the opposite for me. I had ZERO idea that people who were not Jewish or Muslim circumcised their children anywhere in the Western world. Its just not done here.

I live near a "crunchier" town NorCal so CDing, RFing forever, EBFing, boobs out BFing everywhere, family beds, organic everything, baby wearing, and attachment parenting is quite common, so most of the stuff I see on HB isn't that odd to me! Since the crunchier stuff didn't work for us (we live by a strict schedule, sleeptrained, we don't do AP, we use sposies, combo fed while mostly EPing, didn't do BLW, and let my kid eat sugar sometimes, for example) but also are anti-Santa, religious, like to do a lot of consumer research on new baby products, I've actually found more people to commiserate with on HB!
pomegranate / 3375 posts
I live in Portland, so basically all of this stuff is a *thing*. I will say, I never get into heated conversations about parenting related topics with my friends IRL. In fact, it's pretty rare that I even talk to my friends about divisive issues or parenting, in general.
persimmon / 1355 posts
People up in arms abt lap babies on planes. Everyone I know takes full advantage of the free flights while they can! I live in a "crunchy" town in CA, so most of the things mentioned here I see IRL.
nectarine / 2173 posts
Hmmm I'm hard pressed to think of any except not knowing many IRL who did strict BLW.
Most of the "only in Hellobee" things I can think of relate to pregnancy and birth more than parenting...I don't know anyone IRL that's had a home birth (outside of patients I've seen transported to the hospital after one). Some other birth plan ideas that I haven't seen elsewhere.

The clothes. HB has some very well dressed babies. I don't know anyone IRL that dresses babies and kids this trendy or buy brands like Tea, HA, etc. people I know are target, old navy and gap for fancy people!
coconut / 8483 posts
I only know a couple people who breastfed passed a few months
Only a couple people rf passed age 1 - I know a few that switched early (like at 10 months) because "it's more comfortable"
I know no one that doesn't do Santa
grapefruit / 4455 posts
@Zbug: seriously! I had no idea people were against this and even judgy about it!
This isn't a strictly HB thing but I think people on HB tend to be way more strict about their LO's eating and have a much more strict healthy foods only attitude. Or maybe those who do are just more vocal.
The name brand only stuff in general seems to be a thing. I don't know if we generally have higher income people on here but I hear a lot of "quality over quantity" comments when IRL people seem to have some higher priced stuff but mostly will just use the lower priced thing even if it's not as good quality. (Eta, not to single anyone out because I don't remember who said what but I remember a thread where graco style strollers weren't even considered real strollers, and some of those aren't cheap either, IMO!) There are often brands (and I'm not sure if they're considered name brands but people seem loyal to them) I've never heard of (after two recent babies and I admit I shop too much) mentioned on here!
pomegranate / 3350 posts
Mostly extended RF - but I am seeing more people at least keep their kids RF until 2.
Extended BF too - I have one friend that did until 2.5 and I can only think of one other that made it to a year or beyond and that was because she had a hard time getting her LO to wean.
It's not common on HB but I don't know anyone else in IRL that BF while pregnant or tandem nursed, except for one cousin about 10 years ago.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@2littlepumpkins: I do think the majority of members are at least upper middle class although most probably don't think they are.
Some of these babies have travelled more in the past two years than I have in 5!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
I didn't know juice was a big deal for some until HB... Also don't know anyone IRL who brings a car seat and buys a seat for their infant on an airplane
nectarine / 2690 posts
Babymoons, push presents, cloth diapering, extended breast feeding, no screen time...I'm sure there's more lol
pear / 1672 posts
Thinking 2,000 sq ft houses are small/4 bedrooms as standard/own a home more than 3,000 sq. ft.
Most of the parent related things are pretty common or I know someone IRL. It's the lifestyle ones that are very different.
pear / 1593 posts
@regberadaisy: haha yes - gap is my fancy
@2littlepumpkins: oh yes - that's another one - I don't know anyone who buys the expensive brand strollers, swings, etc that seem to be the only ones considered on HB. I do see a lot of bob strollers since I'm a runner, but that is about it for "high end" gear
