@mrsjyw: @Mrs. Champagne: yea I'm the only person I know who didn't circumcise, and doesn't plan to "do Santa"

@runnerd: I was on the fence about Santa! Even this year at 3.5. Then my daughter asked me after Christmas why Sanat didn't bring her a gift. Is it because she was a bad girl? In her ultimate sad face. *momfail* DH and I were scrambling to try and find a reason. I think because all the other kids must've been talking about it. All her teachers must've been asking her. Ugh. I felt so shitty. We are now doing Santa next Christmas. LOL

@BKCaribBaby: agreed. Sometimes it's like episodes of Love it or List it that DH and I make fun of when they're like "this house is too small for us we're about to start a family" and the house is like 2,000-2,500 sq. ft.

PB anywhere chair and fancy clothing labels for kids.

All the parenting stuff that most people are commenting on I see in real life.

Mostly brands, really, I had never heard of Frye Boots, Tea Collection, Boden, David Yurman (is that even right?,) Anywhere chairs, etc. Around here, Janie and Jack is over the top expensive. Most people (like me) dress their kids in Carter's.

I also had never heard of BLW, most people around here call that finger foods.

    Oh and Bento boxes!

  5. SweetiePie

    honeydew / 7463 posts

    - BLW I had never heard of. Everyone I know did purees at 4/5 months.
    - I don't know anyone who was still RF past 2 years.
    - I also know NO ONE who didn't sleep train/CIO. The idea of a baby still waking at night past 6 months is totally foreign to me.

@simplyfelicity: I agree, there's a lot of simple things that have fancy names around here!

I just had to google anywhere chair.

None of my irl friends did cry it out (that I know of), most of my friends did not circumcize their sons (including Jewish friends), and none of my real life friends are Republicans, though some of my extended in-laws are. And HB seems super religious to me, in general. I remember a thread about not swearing, I was like

  9. MoonMoon

    pomegranate / 3393 posts

@Cherrybee: i think the US is slowly but surely moving away from routine circumcision. Just a couple of decades ago it was over 90% done, now it's like 50% but hugely regional. Like close to 100% in the south, close to 0% in parts of CA etc.

  10. simplyfelicity

    cantaloupe / 6634 posts

@MoonMoon: That's so interesting, I usually think of HB as being very nonreligious! Then again, I am from a pretty conservative, Christian area in California.

  11. MoonMoon

    pomegranate / 3393 posts

@simplyfelicity: I think this thread is really giving me perspective! 1/2 of people notice one thing, the other 1/2 the exact opposite! I like the mix

@MoonMoon: wow, really? Only 50% of US boys were circumcised? That seems so low to me. Must be regional. I know 0 people that DIDN'T circumcise their sons here in the North East.

  14. Meowkers

    persimmon / 1364 posts

I don't know anyone who didn't circumcise their son. I had no idea that there were so many people who don't do it.

Don't know anyone who cloth diapers.

@2littlepumpkins: and we always make fun of the Americans on House Hunters International who move abroad expecting huge homes but they want the authentic country experience!

  16. Portboston

    persimmon / 1281 posts

    @littlejoy: Same!

All of the 'crunchy' stuff is totally common in Portland. We have one friend here with a young one and our parenting styles are very similar. Both CD-ing, BLW, etc. I also have friends in Souther California with young babies, no one is CDing & I introduced a few of them to BLW (they had never heard of it!)

@Alba4: I'm probably exaggerating in my mind, because now that I Google it, I see all kinds of numbers, the lowest being about 58%. I should have looked before posting!

Anywhere Chairs (I had to look it up to figure out what it was), WOHM (I'm the only one in my group of friends, anyway), dressing you kid in fancy clothing, and referring to you kid in months past 18.

Hm, I know people that do all spectrums of these things! I feel like HB is more informed, but I am guessing that's what brought all of us to a parenting forum in the first place!

  20. youboots

    honeydew / 7622 posts

    @gingerbebe: @littlejoy yup!

Cloth diapering is common in my area (not many in my group of friends, but I have been converting people), breastfeeding to 1 year or more is the norm, well dressed kids are everywhere. Lots of SAHMs here. I feel that I am one of the few people that did not do BLW.

I'm trying to think what is abnormal to me.... Drawing a blank now.

So on HB I feel among kindrid spirits.

"NTNP" - among my friends IRL, if you're "NTNP", then you're TTCing

Sleep training - I almost don't know anyone IRL who has sleep trained. Just not really a thing among my friends. (Helps that we have a year off work, I'm sure!)

So many babies being tongue-tied and having to have it corrected. I only know of one person IRL that has had it done with their LO.

I don't know anyone else into Montessori, although when I talked to my mom about it she knew what I was talking about. My dad was clueless.

For BLW and CD I know a few others only because I did it first and convinced them to do it too!

I only know one other person who did babywise IRL but that doesn't seem popular on HB either.

    I'm in New Zealand so I'm sure a lot of it is just regional stuff;
Formula feeding by choice (my oldest was mixed fed due to supply issues from 4-12 weeks)
    CIO
    Nurseries at the hospital
Circumcision (I think the rate here is about 2%)
    Sleeping babies in fleece
    Vitamin D drops
Having specific doctors - we have a GP and then if we need to see someone specialised we get referred.
Needing to pay for hospital care
Short maternity leave (I am so thankful we get 14 weeks paid - at min wage - and up to a year off with job held open - I took 13 months last time with paid holiday first, will take about the same this time)

Also, Aden and Anais - when my big girl was born you couldn't get it here - and after reading about t on the blog I ordered someon Amazon and loved it, it is an absolute essential!!

I feel in kindred spirits on HB about almost everything. Only things I can't think of that I have yet to see IRL are WAHMs/MLM moms. (I have FB acquaintances who live on the other side of the country who do though, so probably regional.) Almost everyone here WOH, I know one SAHM.

  31. Greentea

    pomelo / 5678 posts

    Oh man.

CIO and sleep training. Never even heard.of.it!
BLW, I still don't get it (we tried).
Not attempting to BF until 2 years, 1 year minimum.
Circumcision- I don't know anyone who does this anymore, not a big thing here.
    Marrying and kids before 25.
Expecting nannies to take children to a nanny's doctor appointment.
Wanting a very large home (okay, I don't even know anyone who lives in a suburb!)
"Working staus" as an identifier or thing, literally not a point of contention for anyone I know IRL- most families have one person that "stays at home," but it doesn't define you, and I know an equal amount of SAHDADS! IRL. And I've never been asked or asked anyone.
And I don't know anyone who does Santa etc.

This is making me feel like a jerk, but those are things that are only HB to me!

NTNP.. Never heard it and to be honest I still don't understand it. In my mind you are either preventing (birth control) or trying to get pregnant (aka no birth control).

  33. Greentea

    pomelo / 5678 posts

@BandDmommy: yeah... lets be real: either you are actively preventing, or you are secretly trying. I think it is just a "mindset" so people feel less pressure.

Very large homes, nannies, early pregnancy testing (but maybe people just don't talk about it?), and anti-vaxing are not things I see/hear much about here. I know quite a few people who CD, EBF, ERF, etc. here but that is just my circle. There are plenty of others who don't do any of that.

  38. ms.line

I hear a lot of "HB things" from young moms I know IRL - super healthy eating, EBF, strict car seat rules, cloth diapering, brand names, etc. But almost all of the moms I know WOH, and no one had kids before 29. I'm sometimes shocked by how young the moms are on HB.

Eh, I grew up in a tiny town in west Texas, started my adult life in Dallas, traveled all over the world and made friends, married a non Christian/non American and now live in yuppie central outside NYC, so I know ppl who do and don't do almost everything when it comes to parenting. I can't think if anything that is talked about here that hasnt come up IRL.
