For those of you who put up outdoor lights, what kind of bulb do you use? Mini, C6, etc? Do you leave them up all year or take them down off the house in January? Do you use a service or do it yourself?
We haven't done Christmas lights before but I would like to start!

I'm not sure what type of bulb either, but we always put up and take them down ourselves. I enjoy doing it.

My dad used to put up lights and take them down after New year's. These past few years it's been me and the hubs. Can't wait for lo to see the lights this year!

I have no idea about the bulb, but DH puts ours up and we take them down around the first week of January. We got this really cool timer from Lowe's last year--it automatically turns the lights on/off at certain times.

I have no idea what kind of bulbs we use... I think they're LEDs? I don't know what kind. We put them up mid November and take them down mid January.

@lawbee11: yes, we have a timer too! Thank goodness or our electric bill would be even higher!!

@lawbee11: Ahh we don't have a timer, we always just turn them on when we get home (around 5:45 and turn them off before bed (around 10:30). We have it set up so a light switch in our house turns them on and off. A timer would likely be more convenient though!

We have both minis and C6' plus some giant ones. DH loves Christmas lights, so we usually use about 50 strands. We typically put them up Thanksgiving weekend if we are home and take them down early Jan.

We use C4's and we take them down in January. I love putting up Christmas lights! It's something my dad always did and I carried it on when I bought my own house.

@Smurfette: Yes! There is someone on our street that leaves them up all year around and it drives me INSANE! Not an elderly couple - no physical disabilities - no excuse..just pure lazy. I want to leave an anonymous note on the door...

For those of you who don't use LEDs - do you try to follow the 3 strings connected rule?

@ Adira, never heard that rule, so no. We wrap the trees in our front yard which takes about 20 strands each and they are all connected in line.

@Reese: is it really gauche to do that? There are a couple of homes in our neighborhood who leave them up but they aren't turned on.

@stine_ciro: Oh wow, really?? I know with LEDs you can do like 30 strings together, but I thought with the regular ones you were only supposed to connect 3-5!

LEDs. We have someone come put them up and take down, but the only cost to us is a bottle of wine.

We're skipping them this year (we just bought our house in August) and will probably just do lights on the insides of our windows and our front rail. But - we'll be stocking up on lights after Christmas for next year!

@sunny: Maybe its just me? People on my street don't turn them on either but I still think it looks lazy to never take them down.
