Anyone done it? Any tips? Paint that worked great? I'm researching it today...it's my holiday project this week. I keep reading good things about Zinsser oil based primer. We have these really light cabinets and I want to go to white. We have orange-ish walls like the second photo.

I know both Young House Love and Bower Power Blog have done this (painted white). I think they both have tutorials and product reviews.

We painted ours! and by "we" I mean that we hired someone to do it 
He didn't use any fancy cabinet paint, he sprayed them with a paint sprayer and he used the same paint that he painted our trim with. I think he used a gloss so they wipe down easier? We left the insides brown just because it was easier and I don't mind the look..he painted both sides of the doors only.
I will say that they're kindof rough to get spills off of in the cracks (our door style is similar to pic #2) and If I spill something it gets stuck into the frame of the doors and since it isn't cabinet finish paint I have to scrub it more because it's a little rougher than normal cabinet finish is.. if that makes sense? Either way, we're happy with them and I would do it again using regular paint because it's a lot cheaper and as long as you get your mess up right away it's a non-issue to clean them!

@blackbird: we painted ours last summer! It took one day.
We used BIN primer from Lowes. It dries in 45 minutes and is permanent. We taped off every tiny thing in our kicthen and used plastic to cover our appliances. One drip and game over.
We did two coats of primer and two coats of snowbound white (sherwin Williams)
Easiest project ever.

I haven't done my kitchen yet, but i did my laundry room using Zinsser and white (old color was yellowy orange oak) and it turned out great! I forgot to sand under the cabinet, and the primer took even on the glosser surface just fine, I'll definitely be using Zinsser oil primer for the kitchen when I get to it. I'd still give it a light sanding even though YHL says its not needed to b/c it's high traffic and I want to make sure it's as durable as possible.
I also used Rustoleum kitchen transformations on my bathroom, and I DONT recommend that at all. Oil primer and paint is MUCH more durable.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Did you have to do any special sanding with that product? I'm dying to paint our oak cabinets white but the thought of so much sanding is making me think twice.

@avivoca: my husband deep cleaned them with TSP and gently sanded them with sandpaper to rough them up a bit. We didn't use a sander, though, which I saw some websites recommend.
It seriously took longer to remove all the doors than it did to sand and paint them.

@T.H.O.U.: it honestly was. We painted mostly with foam rollers and foam brushes.
We did it while Chloe napped and after she went to bed. That's how easy it was lol

I so want to do this, but in a bright color, like Annie Sloan's Antibes Green...I am obsessed with that color.
I am wondering about using chalk paint and a wax, our kitchen isn't high traffic and this would be an interim thing until we remodel (eventually).

Soooo.....YHL is really selling this Zinsser Smart Prime and Benjamin Moore Advance Paint. The lady on the phone at the local hardware store was telling me she did hers and freaking LOVES it and the hard part is being patient between coats (gotta let it 8 hours. eep. That means primer can go on Tuesday night, and Coat 1 goes on Wedn AM, and a second coat goes on Wedn PM. Then I can reassemble Thurs and clean up. I'm actually familiar with allkyd based paints (we use them at work) so I know they should hold up really well. Too bad I can't just steal a can from work, heh.
@purplepumps, I've been debating the sanding step. I keep reading mixed reviews, but I know that you need a slight anchor profile for good adhesion, so I'm going to suck it up and do it. What a hassle, though.
@mrs. jump rope, Yes TSP! that's what I was going to use. I honestly think the prep is going to take FAR longer. Taping and laying cloth, pulling everything apart and laying it out in a logical order, then barricading E away from the kitchen for four days. I'm actually taking two days off work to do this....
@looch, i would LOVE to do it bright, if we didn't already have super bright walls.
I was just going to go with a basic white, but now I'm wondering if I should pick a tinted white....

@blackbird: our cabinets are nasty 80s laminate, so we had no choice but to use BIN. It's the only paint that would stick to the surface. The upside is that it was completely dry in 45 minutes, so our workflow was so much quicker than we could have ever imagined. We did one cabinet after another, like an assembly line, and by the time we were at the end if was time to do a second coat... Then flip them and repeat. We also let them dry outside so that cut down on the dry time, though 45 minutes is absolutely nothing..
The downside is that it's permanent so there wasn't any room for mistakes or accidents. We had to very, very carefully tape and put plastic down. Our kitchen looked like a scene in dexter!

@blackbird: The sanding is not so bad. I'd definitely recommend buying a palm sander ($30-$50). You can sand a door in under a minute. And then you just have to do a quick once over for the grooves that it can't get to.

@mrs. jump rope, Yep, we're going to tape the ENTIRE THING off. I think that will take the longest. Taping always takes FOREVER. Plus i don't want to slip on the plastic.
@purplepumps, yeah we have a lot of flat faces on ours so it probably wouldn't hurt! i wouldn't even be surprised if DH has one downstairs that I just don't know about. Plus, it's just a light scuff
@looch+smurfette, Yes, but there are SO MANY SHADES OF WHITE haha.
I also have a pretty white irridescent tile that I"ve been holding onto because we want to add a backsplash

@blackbird: I followed the YHL directions exactly when we repainted some cabinets. Worked really well!! It is time consuming because of the wait between coats, but it wasn't that difficult. We didn't paint inside the boxes, only the fronts of them and for the doors we had to wait for one side to dry before flipping to do the other side. I also laid them all out on upside-down bowls so that the doors weren't flat on the ground while painting so that drips don't "pool" up on the sides. Watch for drips like a hawk!

@laughlines, yessssss all that wait is going to kill me. I am so impatient! But i figure, too, if i'm taking off work, I can slap the paint on in the AM, then have the rest of the day to sort of enjoy. So there's a silver lining 
We're only doing the fronts, too. I'm going to make sure to use some bowls, though, great idea!

@blackbird: oh, and i even used their exact same color that YHL used (i think it was BM "cloud cover" in the advance paint) and it ended up being a little more yellow that i was expecting. So if you're looking for a more pure white, esp by orange walls, i wouldn't use that one.

@laughlines, thanks! i am leaning towards "simply white". because I don't want too many colors going on....it looks nice and soft in their photos! But i would be bummed if it ended up yellow in ours, esp with the orange

I did the YHL method! It took forever because the paint takes a long time to cure but it was easy for sure and now that it's done, I'm so so pleased with it!!

We want to do this sooooo bad. We feel so guilty painting brand new cherry cabinets, but we both feel like it would lighten up the whole room. What do you think?

@Cupcake: omg, I would LOVE to have your cabinets! I wouldn't be able to bring myself to paint over new cabinets like that. Unless you really hate your cabinets, I think your backsplash is the problem. A lighter back splash would really help brighten the space and could really transform it imo.
