We have a honda CRV but will get an Acura MDX when it's time to upgrade.

We have an Acura MDX and love it! I think it will last us having 2-3 kids easily.

My best friend had the MDX for years with her 2 kids and recently switched to the Highlander Hybrid and she says she vastly prefers the Highlander (drives more like a car and not so bulky but still super roomy)
Everyone I know that has a Highlander loves it. That's what we are leaning towards for our next car bc we want the 3rd row seating option. Currently we have the Lexus RX330

We test drove many 3rd row seat SUVs (and the Mazda 5 which is ADORABLE, like a mini mini van, but front wheel drive = not good for new england winters, alas). Ended up with the Mazda Cx-9 and we absolutely LOVE IT. We pay a ton for gas which is a bummer, but it really is our perfect car. We need a 3rd row seat since two huge carseats take up an entire backseat. Even in our giant car, a person can BARELY fit between the two carseats in the middle. So when we have a guest, we put up one half of the third row and move the booster seat back there, and the guest(s) sit in the middle row next to the convertible carseat. We absolutely love, love love this configuration.
FYI: many many 3rd row SUVs leave NO cargo space if the 3rd row is up. Literally you couldn't fit an umbrella stroller in the space left. When we saw the Cx-9's cargo space with the 3rd row up, we were SOLD!

Subaru Crosstrek and Chevy Traverse here! Love both of them. My Crosstrek can get a bit crammed with two carseats and stroller but I love driving it. I feel like my husbands Traverse is too big of an SUV/crossover for me.

My good friend has a Honda Pilot with a third row and it is really spacious. I don't LOVE the exterior of the car but I was really impressed with the inside so we may consider that whenever we have baby #2
grapefruit / 4545 posts
I have a Grand Cherokee now and only 1 LO - but I dont think it will be big enough when its time for #2. For us, going up north includes a dog grate, golf clubs, baby stuff and our stuff - I am already terrified of packing tomorrow with all of this!
We'll be eyeing the Acadia and Suburban when the time comes to upgrade. And if Jeep ever comes out with a third row vehicle again that'll be on the short list too. And maybe the Durango. I just saw a Suburban XLT...that bad boy was AWESOME. Even with the third row there was a full normal size SUV trunk - baller.
@LuLu Mom: just an FYI, may want to do some research. The Buick and Tahoe will have very similar (if not identical) components and electrical systems to the Acadia - I know bc my company makes them and I know we supply most of the GM brand models. So if the issues have not been fixed on all new models you may find similar issues with those cars as well.

We have a 2012 Acadia and haven't had any of the electrical problems. We love it. My sister has the Buick Enclave (same platform) but it is 1-2 years older and it's been a non-stop warranty problem. So I feel like GM has cleaned up the Acadia issues.

We had a Honda Pilot for years and loved it because it was roomy, the 3rd row, and the large cargo area. Last year we bought a Toyota Highlander and I love it even more than the Pilot! It has all of the same features, but feels even roomier, and I love that the 2nd row can convert from row/bench seating to two captains chairs.
FWIW, my second choice was the Infiniti QX60 {formerly JX} and while it's beautiful, it felt like a tank and I didn't like the look of the consol/interior panel.

@winniebee: It's a 2010, so it's possible. We have a friend who has a 2012 and they've had some issues, but not nearly as many as we have.

@BakerBee: Exactly! I can barely fit my diaper bag and stroller back there when the third row is up. And I'm a total car-hoarder, so I have all sorts on nonsense back there, so it's always a pain to clear everything out when we need the third row. I'm surprisingly looking forward to making the switch to a mini-van. It took some time to come around to the idea, but when I see all the perks and storage with the price tag, I can't justify spending 10k more on a fancy SUV with everything I want.

We don't have 2 kids, but we really like the look of an Audi Station wagon. If I got to pick, it'd be that

I'm just expecting my first LO, but we went ahead and bought a 2014 Acura MDX in anticipation of it lasting for at least 2 kids if not 3. I love it!

I'm about to have #2, and we have a 45 lb dog. We got the Toyota highlander w the third row. I'm happy with it but honestly it's not a ton of room to me! I was in the no minivan camp but I might change my mind! We take lots of 5/6 hr road trips though to my in laws and my family's vacation home... And the car is already full. So I guess it depends on your needs too of course!

Toyota highlander. It has been amazing with two kids but I think it might be tricky with 3. I can see how people like minivans with 2+ since everything fits.
DH wants an SUV that can tow so we'll probably get a Tahoe or Suburban in 3 or 4 years.

@kml636: that's how I feel! Once both car seats are in, then the strollers, groceries, etc. it feels cramped. It's really difficult to take adults with us in the back row too.

We had a Nissan Pathfinder as a rental and really loved it. It also has a 3rd row.

@Adira: DH and I both have accords! We can fit both of us, 2 big kids, and LO in his car seat right now!

@cmomma17: Oh good, that's encouraging!! I'm hoping my Accord will continue to be big enough!!

I have the Ford Edge too which is great for everyday, but my DH has a suburban and that us what we use for vaca. With a nb, almost 2 yr old and a 10 yr old we filled it up and used a car topper but I definitely over pack and we had DH's golf clubs too.

Outback and love it. Plenty of room with two car seats and storage in trunk--double stroller plus extra. I really wanted a pilot, but hated the gas mileage.

We have a 4 door Chevy Colorado truck (with tonneau cover) and a Cadillac SRX suv (no 3rd row). I'd like a minivan but DH says we don't need one

@winniebee: I was going to suggest an edge! I have one and love it. I can get our stroller, one laundry basket and two suitcases in the trunk with room to spare. We never feel cramped.

@winniebee: Two of my friends with two kids both have the Acura MDX. I also recently looked at the new durango which has a third row. Its huge! It also looked like a mini van to me, which is why we didn't get it. But its clearly not a mini van so maybe that's a good option.

I LOVE my MDX. It was supposed to be our family car (Dh had a sports car) but then we got pregnant with twins and realized we can't fit both carseats in the MDX without moving the driver seat all the up.. So now we have the MDX and the Honda Odyssey. Odyssey has got all the bells and whistles, which Dh loves... But I still prefer the sports tuned handling of the MDX.

@winniebee: I love my highlander!! The newer models have a 3rd row.

@lavender: does the traverse feel roomy on the inside? I find that some of the newer cars feel cramped.
I was also looking at the Santa Fe.
grapefruit / 4554 posts
@katsupgirl: it definitely feels roomy for me. We also leave the 3rd row down for more cargo room. But then again I'm comparing the feel of roominess to my smaller crosstrek.
grapefruit / 4442 posts
My sister has 3 kids and a Jetta, its a little tight if you have two car seats and need to fit an extra person. When you're looking at the cars, I would suggest taking your car seat out, installing it and see how much space you have.

@Pumuckl: we just bought a 2014 Nissan pathfinder and love it!! It's got a ton of room, built well, and the most usable 3rd row IMO. My hubby is a car guy and it was definitely the most impressive for that price range.

@sorrycharlie: The new Highlanders look roomier and longer too. I really like my Highlander but I think my next car is going to be a minivan. I have 1 child but I am always chauffeuring my nieces and nephews around so a minivan would be awesome. The Odyssey looks so spacious.

@mrs. wagon: I'm confused. Front wheel is better than rear-wheel for inclement weather driving. We're considering a new car and don't feel that we need All-Wheel drive because we already have all-wheel in our main car. We are looking at front wheel drive because of the better weather handling. Do you know something I don't know that should make me avoid front wheel drive?

I love my highlander, it has 4 wheel drive and third row seating, but still drives like a car.

Love my cx-9! We also have a Mountaineer. Neither Will be great for more than 2 though. My husband wants an armada when the time comes.
