Hi ladies! I am 21w1d and noticed bright red bleeding this morning so I went in the dr for an ultrasound. The baby is fine, but they did notice that I have a small abruption of my placenta. They recommended lots of rest this weekend and I go back Monday morning for a follow-up ultrasound to see if the spot has gotten better or worse. Has anyone had anything like this? I have heard of placental abruption, but I was thinking it was more common in the third trimester.

I was monitored for suspected partial abruption around 13/14 weeks. I had a lot of bleeding, and they thought it might have been an undiagnosed SCH clearing up, and it might have been along the edge of my placenta causing a small separation (it was really small less than inch). It sounded horribly scary at the time, but baby grew perfectly and I got lots of extra ultrasounds to make sure he was getting plenty of nutrients.

@runnerd: I was diagnosed with a partial abruption today at 14 weeks. Do you remember how long you needed to stay off your feet when you had yours? Looking online has me worried I am going to be on bed rest a long time. My separation was similar in size to yours and at this time my dr said I needed to stay off my feet for a week.
@mrszack: did you have any more problems with the placental abruption after it happened at 21 weeks? -
@autumnleaves: I wasn't put on bed rest, just told to take it easy, no lifting, no exercise, but I basically only sat at my desk or laid on the couch for about the week after my major bleeding episode bc I was sick with worry. I was told no lifting or exercise until I had 2 weeks without bleeding, but had no more episodes after 15 weeks, so really just A LOT of extra monitoring the rest of pregnancy.
It's a scary diagnosis but I read SOOO much about it, and if yours is about the size mine was, it really usually turns out ok, just have to make sure placenta is still healthy.

@autumnleaves: I was on bedrest for a few days before I went back in for a follow-up, where they saw that it appeared to be much better. I did take it easy for at least another week, just to be safe, but I didn't have any more bleeding. I'm 34 weeks now and everything has been fine since. I hope your situation turns out the same! Keep us posted!
