I didn't know she'd been fired but I did see the video today.

She always rubbed me the wrong way. Good riddance.

Good riddance. Ive never liked her. I find her voice irritating and her recipes are not that great.

Im glad Food Network took swift action.

I was never that into her, but would watch her show and salivate occasionally. After the diabetes thing happened, I stopped watching or paying attention because I thought she was a total fake and a hypocrite. I thought they should've fired her back then, so it's only fitting now.

I liked her way back when she first started on food network.

Now, she has just had so much bad press and it definitely is not good for her.

My reaction is not to what Paula Dean admits to saying in 1986 but what your reactions are. Wow. Just. Wow.

I enjoy her show and her food and feel bad things escalated like this for her.

@mediagirl: I agree with you. I really liked her show and food. I will have to go find an article saying what happened since I really don't know.

I know nothing about what has happened recently but I do like her cooking. The diabetes thing didn't get me going. If she did use the n word that's shameful.

It's not just about her use of the N-word*. I read a lot of the deposition because I was curious. Deen mentioned that the last time she remembered using the N-word was when she was telling her husband about the guy who held her at a gunpoint at the bank she was working at.

Honestly, hearing that older white people have used the N-word or use the N-word doesn't surprise or shock me. The plantation wedding part? That was dumb and insensitive. There are a couple of other things I've read from her autobiography that lead me to believe that because she was raised in the segregated South there are things that she is just oblivious an ignorant about. Do I think she's racist? I don't know and I probably won't ever know. I do think she's ignorant. And if you read more of the deposition there are questionable things about her brother's behavior (that she knew about).

I was done with Paula after the diabetes lies. She'll be fine. She has millions and lots of fans.

*I have a problem with anyone using the N-word.

I'm not surprised. I guess I need to read more of the story. Sucks she got fired. They could give her another chance.

@Mrs. Pen: Last year it came out that she has Type 2 diabetes and had it for a few years, even though she kept cooking up all those fatty sugary dishes on her TV show that as a diabetic she couldn't eat herself!

And then once she admitted that she had diabetes she joined forces with a drug company to create healthy meals.

That really soured my opinion of her.

I had no idea about any of this...but if she really said that about the plantation themed wedding, that was dumb of her. She knows people are listening to what she says because she's famous.

ETA- And I'm not dismissing the part where it's just a dumb thing to say, period. I'm just also saying that if it were out of context/ blown out of proportion/whatever, it was still dumb for her to let something like that slip, even just jokingly or whatever it was. Guess I'll have to read up on it later.

Ok I can't read that whole thing..it's just taking too long! Having worked in a place where people were constantly looking for a free buck I can see why this might have been blown out of proportion. But at the same time, either she isn't very articulate or just not very aware of a) what's happening in her own business (sort of understandable) and b) social norms.

Her food looks good, but I can't watch a whole show. Her personality bugs me, for some reason. I just can't listen to her talk...not her accent, but her tone and everything. It's hard to explain without sounding like a jerk, lol.

I feel the same way about Miss Kay on Duck Dynasty, too...I feel bad for being annoyed with these ladies, cause I'm sure they're nice. It's just too slow for me, lol

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: "Using that word is never a mistake." <--- yes, exactly. I think the story @mrsjazz referred to about using the word when talking about being held at gunpoint is very telling. I know a lot of people are trying to give her a pass for that one, saying it was an awful, scary situation she was referring to, but I actually think the opposite. In that case she clearly wasn't using the word in an "I'm an old southern white lady, this is just how we talk" manner, she was choosing to call someone that in a derogatory way. I think it says a lot about a person if their mind immediately goes to that word in a negative situation. That word would and has NEVER come to my mind in any situation.

I also don't think she handled this whole controversy well AT ALL. She was supposed to be on the Today Show yesterday to explain and literally just didn't show up. She canceled so last minute that they still teased her interview in the show open, and when they went live Matt had to say she would not actually be on and that her rep had called minutes ago to say she was "too exhausted." Such BS, I think that was a very poor decision on her part.

Old thread I know, but I am in shock that people actually think that cavalier use of the n-word is okay and are defending Paula Deen. Wow, just wow.

@Mrsbells: exactly. Who in their right mind thinks a plantation wedding with an all-black serving staff is a good thing and has the nerve to say so out loud?
