I just learned that you should take LO to the dentist after 1 y/o? Where have I been?
If you've taken your LO to a dentist, did you find a pediatric dentist, or did you just go to your own dentist?

I've never heard of a pediatric dentist!!
Here in the UK, the NHS advice is to take them by the time they are two. We just take them to our own family dentist. I have an appointment in two weeks so I'm going to ask then if I need to bring her sooner.....

I take D to a chain dentiat office that's geared towards kids. Its one of the few that take his insurance so I just bring him there.

I took my son to a pediatric dentist at 1 and 2 and my own dentist at 3. My own dentist is not a clowny super youthful dude so I waited until my son could sit in the chair quietly without a meltdown and he did great. (My daughter is 19 months and hasn't seen anyone yet -- she didn't have any teeth at 12 months.) for me the choice was personality based although I should add that at the first appointment they just gave some fluoride, had a look and showed us how to brush. It was more for the parents!

Here in Sweden, you get an appointment in the mail at around 12 months old. DH and I were really stressing about the appointment, but when we arrived, the dentist said it wasn't necessary to actually see DD. She just wants to talk to the parents and show them how to brush her teeth. We left with a toothbrush and a pamphlet. I think he real appointment is when she's 2 (soon). Eek!

I waited until my kids had all their teeth which was right before age 2 - so the 1st apt was at 2yrs old
I chose a Pediatric dentist because as much as I love my dentist her office is very doctor looking and she probably doesn't have the patience to deal with kids.
The pediatric office is bright and colorful and has TVs and fish and tons of prizes!!!!!
The staff is amazing!!! Both of my kids had horrible visits the 1st few times and the staff was soooo patient - I was getting irritated but they weren't!
My 3 yr old had chipped her tooth and I was concerned about tooth rot and they somehow managed to get x-rays of her tooth - for that alone I wanted to buy them all lunch
Oh and no tooth rot - yay!

Pediatric. If I had a family dentist I trusted I'd probably take her to him/her.

My girls will go to my office I work in. My boss (the dentist) is a big kid and kids love him.

@Mamaof2: Oh wow!!!
Ok - I think I will look for and make an appointment with a pediatric dentist. Mine is cool, but old and kind of intense looking. And definitely NOTHING fun to look at.

@shopaholic: You are brave for taking her now! There is no way R would have anything to do with it. It would be a huge epic meltdown and she wouldn't even open her mouth.

@Smurfette: same here! Girlfriend is not letting me get her top teeth. I heard they get a coating of fluoride?

@shopaholic: We just went to our 1st appt at a pediatric dentist, I couldn't recommend them enough! R had a fall at day care and I was worried about her teeth...she's not even 1 and HATES having her teeth brushed so I was worried. They were amazing with her and knew exactly how to position her to do what they needed to. They were overly sweet and patient with her.
Considering I was sweating with nerves when we walked in, it was an amazing experience!
ETA: She got a coating of fluoride too...it took two seconds.

@shopaholic: R sticks her tongue out so I can't get to her bottom either. So furstrating. I hate having to pin her down to brush her teeth. Little stinker lets Daddy do it but not me. But he isn't home 4 nights for bedtime.

@shopaholic: a Pediatric dentist is specialized to deal with little toddlers and children. I would HIGHLY recommend them, especially if you have feisty toddler. Like mine. Who hates brushing her teeth unless you blob on the toothpaste that is sickly sweet. All her toothpastes are flouride free and her pediatrician didn't recommend it till she was older so I'm not sure about the coating of flouride. My LO is almost 2 and I haven't gone yet. Probably will around 2.5-3. I almost feel bad for the dentist.

My LO is 20 months and has his first appointment next week with our family dentist (not a pediatric dentistry) who treats all of us.
We have used pediatric dentists in the past, but don't any longer because our insurance doesn't provide coverage for children over 8 years old for them. When my oldest hit 8 we had to find a "regular" dentist and finally hit pay dirt with ours {after an exhausting search}.
While the bells and whistles of a pedo office were nice, I didn't like that we didn't see the same dentist every time since they were larger practices. For me the most important factor is that my LO develops a positive relationship with their dentist, and we have that now, so my youngest will see our family dentist right from the start.

We take LO to a pediatric dentist. He just turned two and had his second appointment. The first one was at 15 months. For both appointments the dentist just counted his teeth and took a quick look to make sure everything looks okay. The first appointment we didn't even go to the dentist chair, just in his office. The second appointment we showed LO the chair and let him climb around in it but ended the appointment in the dentist office. At his next appointment in 6 months they might try to do a cleaning but our dentist said it just depends on how LO does, some kids don't get their first cleaning until 3. I definitely don't want to traumatize him! It also helps that the pediatric dentist is next door to our family dentist.
