I know that deli meat is out unless it is microwaved to the point of steaming. But is pepperoni ok to eat? I've seen conflicting information online. I was thinking of a pizza bagel with pepperoni as a topping. Yay or nay?

I eat pepperoni on pizza and have a deli sandwich a couple times a month. I think it should be fine!

@chopsuey119: Thanks! I'm at the airport and that is the only thing that looks appetizing.

Some lists tell you to avoid pepperoni due to its nitrate content. I have limited my intake, but I have had a couple of slices of pepperoni pizza (in the second and third trimesters).

I was wondering this the other day. I keep a bag of turkey pepperoni in the fridge and will take out some for a snack. I decided to hold off and not eat anymore till I asked my doctor cause everything I could find online was just about it on pizza.

OMG, I didn't even know pepperoni was something I had to be concerned about! Ooops - been scarfing down pepperoni pizzas like it's nobody's business!

@Adira: At least it is cooked! I was eating mine just cold out of the fridge.

@Smurfette: Oh, hahaha! I would've done that too if I had some. What's the concern with pepperoni - is it the same as deli meat? I forgot and had some deli meat on Sunday... ooops

@Adira: That was my thought as I ate about 10 pieces after my work out on Monday. Was crap, is this lunch meat? On my list to ask my doctor tomorrow. I am missing lunch meat already.

@Smurfette: Me too! I used to put a slice of turkey on my morning bagel and it tastes sooooooooo good! I miss it so much.

This seems to be one of those things that doctors/the internet varies about. My OB said that as long as it was eaten in moderation lunch meat was fine (and didn't have to be heated).
You should be fine with pizza since it is heated.

Never knew it was an issue of concern, I have eaten it through my pregnancy! Whoops!

The lady who taught our first pregnancy class through the hospital said that lunch meat was fine as long as it was heated to steaming once because that meant it was fully cooked (you can put it back in the fridge after so that you can have it cold). In regards to nitrates, just don't go overboard...this includes bacon.

@MaisyMay: OMG - are you serious (about being able to heat the lunch meat and then refrigerate it to have it cold)?? That would be awesome!!!

Pepperoni was about the only meat that I could stomach my entire pregnancy- my son may be about 50% pepperoni actually! He turned out just fine.
Plus a pizza bagel would be heated, so my guess is that would make it acceptable

@Adira: Yeah. Once it's heated up, it's fully cooked. The big lunch meat scare from a few years ago had to do with bacteria in meat that wasn't cooked all the way. If you heat it up in the microwave until it's steaming, it's cooked and can be cooled again. It can't magically uncook itself, so you're good to go. lol.

If you eat it once in a while then it's not a problem. But yes it's deli meat.

@MaisyMay: Thanks for telling me this! Although now I'm hungry for my bagel with turkey, haha.

@MaisyMay: Yep - nitrates are sneaky . . . hot dogs (regular) have 'em too.

If it is being heated, you don't have to worry about bacteria. If you're worried about nitrates, check out newman's own frozen pizza (nitrate free pepperonis) or a local natural foods store for DIY nitrate free pepperonis.
Probably doesn't help with the pizza bagel, but if you're craving it!

My doctor told me that lunch meat from the deli counter is not ok, but the prepackaged stuff you buy at the grocery store is. She said it has to do with the preservatives they use in the prepackaged stuff. So I've been eating lunch meat sandwiches all along.
I never really thought about pepperoni having nitrates, but if/when I do eat pepperoni pizza, it's always the Newman's Own, which apparently (thanks, @scg00387) is nitrate-free!
