Does anyone have any experience with period underwear, either for yourself or a teen? I'm looking for recommendations for a good, reliable brand for my daughter who is getting to the age she will need some soon. She doesn't want to try tampons and she isn't too excited about pads, either. I've never used them so any tips or recommendations would be welcome.

I hope my daughter has a couple more years (almost 10) but was thinking of grabbing one of those starter packs.

Also interested but have zero experience! I love the idea as tampon backup (adult perspective) or for a girl to wear around the time she is expecting her period (although realistically that’s probably tough to predict in the early years, and I feel like the undies are too pricey to be an everyday thing).
My nine year old considers herself a puberty expert (ha! this is what I get for being open about bodies/info), but I think we’ve got at least a few years, so I’m hoping that while she can advise her early-bloomer friends on what’s happening, one of them will give her insight into products they like when the time comes. She told me the other night that she was open to the idea of tampons, but could I put them in for her!!! 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve been using period underwear since undergrad and they are a game-changer. My flow was so heavy that I had to use a pad when I used to use tampons. What the period underwear really helps with most is trapping leaks and minimizing them from spreading onto my pants/clothes. This was especially helpful when I sleep at night because the overnight-sized pads didn’t help a whole lot. I was constantly paranoid about the blood leaking onto my sheets because it’s happened a few times. Now that I’m on birth control and using the Always extra heavy overnight pads, it’s a lot better but still feel at ease to wear the period underwear.
As for brands/kinds/types, I can’t really help with that because mine are from Korea. The two types I’ve gotten from Korea are the double-layered with inner-cloth version and double-layered with inner-plastic version. I will say I prefer the cloth version because the plastic version gave off an unpleasant smell and wasn’t as good as absorbing/trapping blood.
Also, I would always recommend using a panty-liner even when using tampons. I believe this will help prolong the period underwear.

I used to use Thinx on light days or as a cup back up. They're very convenient. But after several years, mine have taken on an ammonia sour smell that really bugs me and I can't get rid of, so I haven't been wearing them. I've heard good things about Knix, so I plan on trying those next.
My 8 year old has decided on period underwear for her "period kit," which we haven't actually put together yet. We have a book called "Periods and Vaginas 101" that lists all the period management options, and she decided from there.

I have thinx - 3 different styles that I've had for over 2 years now. They do hold smells although vinegar helps some with that. I like the boyshort style for night time but otherwise only wear them as back up with a cup. I find cloth pads to be easier to manage (clean, change, wash etc) and cheaper. The cup I would have found terrifying as a kid, but as an adult with children it is such a game changer.

I don't have an period underwear experience but I'm so excited/relieved to see this thread. My 8yo seems much closer to her period than I envisioned for her age (including some very light spotting). We've been feeling quite alone but I haven't made a post.

I've been seeing a lot of ads about these in my part of the world by the brand Libresse. I'm thinking about getting a pair for DD, but she's only 9.5yo (so maybe in their smallest size) as a just in case, but's it's not cheap. I'm a little suspicious about the practicality of it. I'm worried the non-breathability would trigger a rash. Not to mention the extra steps needed to clean them.

I've been using Thinx for a couple of years now. I like their hipster briefs the best for daytime use. I ordered a pair of their sleep shorts a few months ago and they are the best! So comfy that I want to wear them when I don't have my period. I just ordered their workout shorts on sale last week and I have high hopes for those based on how great the sleep shorts are. I would absolutely get some for my daughter when she is older. I have noticed some of my older pairs have a slight odor but it isn't terrible and if I change them after a few hours the smell doesn't get bad.
