If you were TTC would you plan a trip that could put you in a foreign country at 6-8 weeks? We're in our 5th cycle and I'm getting tired of putting life on hold. DH suggested using our United miles to go to Seoul before it starts getting cold there, and the dates that would work out best would mean that if by some remote chance things worked this cycle I'd be 6-8 weeks. Which I'm hesitant to be away for because it would be a high-risk pregnancy. And I think I can postpone the reservation without a fee. But if I tell myself I'm afraid to travel, who knows when I'll travel again?

I booked a trip to Mexico a couple months ago - we've been TTC for 5 months. I knew I could be pregnant by then, but I didn't want to put my whole life on hold for something that might not happen by then. I technically could still get pregnant this cycle, which would make me 4-5 weeks by my trip, but I'm not worried either way.

I personally would go as long as you would be comfortable seeking care there (and insurance would cover it) if god forbid something happened. I went to New Zealand at 10-14 weeks. I had to change around a lot of the more adventurous activities because I was pregnant, but I'm so glad I went. (I was also lucky enough not to have morning sickness or anything, though).

We're skipping a family event in Nigeria because if we conceive before then, I won't be able to get some of the vaccines & the malaria drugs you need to take are already limited due to my allergies, and pregnancy would limit my options further. Health care is limited there, should something go wrong or if I got sick, I wouldn't feel comfortable getting treated there.
We are going on a cruise to the Bahamas, and that doesn't worry me at all.
I would just think about if your travel would be risky and if so, would you be comfortable with the health services that would be available to you should you need them.

Would travel insurance cover it if you decided not to go/your doctor told you not to? Normally I would say to just do it, but I don't know why you are high risk, so possibly that would change things? If you could spend just a little bit extra to be able to cancel it if you really couldn't go, that would be a nice compromise, I think. I don't think you should put everything on hold indefinitely, and this trip will be much easier to do now than once you have a LO.

I would just get travel insurance that covers everything, and it would greatly depend on where you go. My doctor wasn't comfortable with me traveling to exotic countries in case i contracted something. I, personally, wouldn't want to travel in my first trimester, considering my history.

Pondering the same thing - I think you're probably okay to make the plans. Like @Mrs Bird my concern is travel to a place with malarial risk (we're dying to go to Thailand), so we might play it safer and pick a destination that's closer/not so risky in terms of parasites/infectious diseases, but don't put it off if you're comfortable being there preggo. Just be prepared for an uncomfortable flight over with plenty of barf bags

I traveled at 8 weeks and the flight was miserable. I was uncomfortable and bloated and throwing up the whole time.
I'm not suggesting you don't go - but keep in mind the flight may be very uncomfortable at that point in pregnancy. -
I travelled to Egypt at 7 weeks, I was totally fine, but I had no morning sickness whatsoever. You never can tell, honestly.

@JoJoGirl: Malarial risk is actually pretty low in Thailand, and restricted to rural, forested areas (i.e., not an issue in the cities and towns where most travelers spend their time). I lived in the region for a few years, and neither I nor any of the expats I knew in the region ever really worried about malaria. (I did, however, know plenty of people with dengue, giardia, etc.- there are plenty of other things to worry about). However, Thailand is awesome, and I wouldn't at all hesitate to go there while pregnant- I might adjust my itinerary and my food choices accordingly if I were pregnant, but I think you could easily plan a safe and wonderful trip there! (On the other hand, while the flight woudl be a pain with a baby, it's also a wonderfully kid-friendly destination if you wait till post-baby to go!)

@Lozza: THAT IS AWESOME INFO!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you! DH and I already decided if we can't make it before baby (I'm still TTC), we're dumping LO with my mom so we can go after (she's agreed to this, ha ha). Great to know we could always bring a baby along if we can handle the 24+ hr flight from the east coast. The other issues you mentioned are also a concern but it seems, according to Dr. Google, lots of people do go while pregnant. I might wall you for advice if we can manage to do it

Although we'd be in the city I'm not entirely sure how/where to get medical care and I'm not terribly fluent in Korean. Plus my food allergies have been a challenge in Seoul. Aaaand hyperemesis gravidarum is notorious in my family so it would probably have reared its ugly head by then. The high-risk part is due to previous losses and because I'm on seizure meds that have a risk of low birth weight and birth defects.
@travelingbrit: Even not pregnant I've thrown up on cross-country flights because of migraines - so embarrassing and miserable with everyone staring at me.
ETA: I think I'm mostly afraid to admit to DH that I worry about these remote risks, sigh.
