If you developed preeclampsia during pregnancy, how did you know? Did you have any symptoms, or did you just find out at a regular prenatal appointment?

I started showing symptoms at 23 weeks and was closely monitored thereafter. I was going to my OB 2x per week and was admitted at 33 weeks 5 days under the assumption I'd be there until I delivered. I ended up delivering 2 days later via emergency c-section.
How are you feeling?

@petunia354: I called my doctor Thursday about some dizziness...I had it pretty bad in my first trimester and we determined it was a low blood pressure issue most likely. My last BP was 138/80, which seems really high for me (usually 110-114/65-70) but when I asked they said it was probably just stress. My OB said the dizziness now was probably vertigo based on my description, and gave me some suggestions to deal with it. I woke up with a horrible headache today, have been having some weird vision issues (I had attributed them to spending too much time staring at my computer screen but who knows). I have been dizzy quite a bit today still. And today every time I have used the bathroom the urine has all sunk to the bottom of the toilet instead of mixing in with the rest of the water. I have never ever seen that before. What in the world.
I feel like a hypochondriac...I probably just need to step away from Google....

@Mrs. Lion: can someone drive you to the drugstore to get your bp checked?
nectarine / 2433 posts
@Mrs. Lion: I'm not as far along as you but I was reading in my week by week book about pre-e and this is the list of symptoms they provide.
My Dr. Keeps reenforcing that I should call if things are different than normal for ME (ie. don't benchmark my symptoms against anyone else)
If you can try and get you blood pressure checked but I would call the Dr ASAP anyway

@Mrs. Lion: I'm being monitored for potentially high BP here at the end of pregnancy (just borderline, right around 140/90) - they are wanting to make sure I don't develop preeclampsia. They have told that two big warning signs that would warrant a phone call would be a headache that that won't go away after taking Tylenol, and any drastic vision changes or double vision. I'd try taking Tylenol - if it doesn't help, then you should definitely call.

I would definitely be seen for a urine test or talk to a doctor. I never did develop pre-e, but struggled with raised blood pressure a lot in the last few weeks - and visual disturbances was one of the main things they asked me about each time. From what I was told, it can escalate so quickly - so as you have quite a few of the symptoms better safe than sorry! Hope all is well and it's just a false alarm

@Mrs. Lion: Those all sound similar to my symptoms and I did have Pre-E and my babies were delivered a few hours later! I had a bad headache that wouldn't go away, my BP had crept up all week and I had some spots/floaties/dizziness. Finally, I went to a pharmacy to have my BP checked and it was very high (160/100, I think??). When I saw the pharmacists face before she even told me the reading, I knew something was off. Go get checked again!!!

How accurate are the automatic BP machines? I went and had it checked a little while ago and it was normal...114/75. So I'm less worried now for sure. Thanks everyone. I'm gonna try to take it easy and see what happens.

@Mrs. Lion: my fingers are crossed for you! I had a few symptoms and went to the drugstore to get checked and my bp was insanely high. They had me stop in my general practitioners office to double check (the midwives group was almost an hour from my house) and my bp was fine. My gp's office was more than happy to help and didn't even think it was an odd request so if there is any doubt in the future maybe try stopping in any of your doctor's offices for a quick check. I hope you feel better and that the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful!

@Mrs. Lion: My doctor told me those machines usually give a slightly elevated reading. It sounds like your BP is okay! I'd still rest and take it easy.

I had no symptoms but had elevated BP when I went in for my 35 week check up (had been low throughout the pregnancy). I was put on bedrest but throughout that week developed terrible abdominal pain which was related to the pre-e affecting my liver. I was induced at 36 weeks. I hope things are uneventful for you from here on!
I didn't develop pre-e with my most recent pregnancy, but I was always asked if I was having vision issues (because of my history). It can't hurt to call your doc if you're worried!

I had several episodes of visual disturbances (floaties/blurry spots) and what I would call haziness (where I was sort of out of it) starting at 36.5 weeks that sent me to L&D where I was found to have elevated BP. They did bloodwork and I did the urine spill test to look for proteins but they never saw anything. However, I was induced at 38 weeks because the BP continued to be elevated even on modified bed rest.
@Mrs. Lion: I hope you are feeling better soon!! And I agree to keep your doc informed of anything that you think is weird!

I didn't have pre-eclampsia but I got pretty close to it. I had high blood pressure and I was leaking protein. No headache though. Every few days I had to do a 24 hour urine catch and they advised me to buy a home BP monitor. I was told to call if it went over a certain number.
So anyways, it wasn't an all of a sudden diagnosis for me. If you have any concerns please let your doctor know.

@Mrs. Lion: when was the last time they checked your urine? They're relatively simple tests, could you call your doctor for a quick walk in test?
I think it's pre eclampsia, it's hard to diagnose yourself because the symptoms are different in everyone. I didn't echibit symptoms, only BP and protein in the urine at a regular appt

@Mrs. Lion: did you take tylenol? I'm known for high for high BP and called with horrible headaches at the end of last pregnancy and they said to take a full dose of tylenol and call back if it wouldn't go away. Based on your BP I wouldn't think it was pre-e but what do I know lol.

They checked my urine on Wednesday at my weekly appointment and all was fine. I am going to probably run by the drug store and get my BP checked again tomorrow, just in case. My doctor is pretty great about returning calls and she is usually pretty cautious...since she knew about my BP and my dizziness and wasn't concerned I am going to try to stay calm haha. She isn't on call this weekend, so I'm going to try to just see how things go, but if I need to I can get ahold of an on call doctor.
Thanks everyone! I'm sure I am just overreacting...pregnancy is so confusing.

@jetsa: Yes, the tylenol helped. That, combined with the normal bp today, makes me feel a lot better.

ETA: just saw your update! Glad you are feeling better tonight!
@Mrs. Lion: no such thing as a hypochondriac while pregnant! I'm sure your doc would be super happy that you called, especially with those symptoms. Have they ever done 24 hour urine catch for this pregnancy? Are you feeling any different to tonight?
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@petunia354: Nope, never had a reason to do the 24 hour urine catch. Feeling ok...still some dizziness and blurry vision, but I still feel like that could maybe just be from having dry eyes. Thank you for asking

I had high bp and moments of lost vision multiple times in my last pregnancy. I bought a bp cuff and would measure to make sure, then do immediate bed rest (if possible). The problem would then go away. Because I never had protein in my urine I was never considered to have pre-e and delivered at 39w+.

Mine slowly started creeping up around 35 weeks and i started swelling pretty badly. I was in the hospital waiting for my scheduled c-section when it really started, luckily. Started with a headache, then weird vision, then my face went numb and I started talking weird I was wheeled in seconds later! So scary. No such thing as being too cautious when it comes to blood pressure in pregnancy!

I was never officially diagnosed, though the nurse did say it when I was in labor, but my BP was pretty high toward the end of my second pregnancy, and then in labor, skyrocketed so high the nurse didn't want me to walk around, tested my urine, found proteins, and they gave me a bunch of pitocin to speed up the already lightening-fast progress, and get baby out ASAP.
