My friends here all use a messaging app (either Facebook, WhatsApp or Viber) or text message (which is more widely used, but also more expensive). Almost no one uses email or IM! I still can't get over a world where so many people don't have or use email addresses!
How do your friends and family like to stay in touch?

I hate talking on the phone so I prefer texting for short notes and email for longer topics

@littlebug: Bee and I use gchat! We're on our desktops a lot, so it's faster than texting/messaging.

Mostly texting because I always have my phone on me and often the times I can do it are when i am nursing the baby- so if I talk she will get distracted. I will also use Facebook messenger with friends who are at work on a computer. But longer topics I use email. Plus FaceTime if the kids are awake and involved.
So yeah I rarely just talk on the phone.

If it's something longer though, we use email. I have a few friends I keep constant email threads going with.

ETA: At work, I used Gchat to talk to coworker friends that aren't on my hall/in my building
