Any distance runners out there? How far into your pregnancy were you able to run and how many miles? I am a runner and just trying to see how other expecting moms are doing with their fitness.

A friend of mine did a marathon at 14 weeks and went for her last run the day she went into labor...she just went a lot slower as time went one and def reduced distance. Personally, I can't imagine!

I'm a runner and am hoping to keep running through my pregnancy. I didn't run through my first pregnancy, but I wish I had. I'm 13 weeks right now and I haven't been running much because I am so exhausted all of the time, but I'm still getting out there about once a week right now, usually for 3- 5 miles. This whole season has been drastically reduced from last year, since I was injured after running Boston last April. I'm starting to get the tiniest bit of energy back, so I'm hoping to get back to running a few times a week soon. I wear a heart rate monitor , which makes DH a lot more comfortable with me running while pregnant, as he tends to be pretty anxious.

I am 22 weeks and still can run at least 5 miles without a problem. I am a little slower for sure but just wondering what other people were experiencing. I am not on a very good schedule though so it's hard to keep any consistency. I should have been doing Boston 2016 but my plan has changed with the baby coming at the end of February! There will be other years!

I chose to stop running in my first pregnancy, but I hope to keep at it the next time.

I ran up until the day my son was born. At 21 weeks, I ran a half marathon. Once I hit my 3rd trimester, I ran around 3 miles 5-6 times a week.

@MegHalle: I ran a half marathon at 6 weeks, running 5 miles just fine now (8 weeks), but no time to run that far. Last pregnancy I ran till two days before baby, though my running speed ended up dropping to slower than my non pregnant speed walking pace. But I still could do 5 miles once a week and 3 two or three times during the week. (5 miles is my usual weekend goal unless I'm training for a half). ALSO last pregnancy I could not run during first tri becuase it messed up my gut but I was able to pick back up around 12 weeks.

I am 12 weeks. I ran the first few weeks of my pregnancy, and noticed my heart rate was higher than normal, but was still able to run. Then I got a severe case of morning sickness and even just walking resulted in me puking the entire time. I gave up all exercise until about two weeks ago, and now I am walking on the trails I used to run. They are mountain biking trails, so it is more hiking. Once I feel completely better I will try to slowly start running again, but with how quickly my hear rate rises wih normal activity now, I might have to wait until post partum.

I jogged until about 28 weeks since I couldn't bike. I ended up getting plantar fasciitis - so I highly recommend stretches. My podiatrist told me pregnant women are at higher risk due to the quick weight gain and in my case, collapsed arches.
If we change our minds and have another, I plan to run all the way through - and have a running routine established prior to TTC.

I ran a half marathon a few weeks before I got pregnant, and then I basically never ran again! I swore I would run through my pregnancy, but the nausea, fatigue, and bloating of the first trimester just made running miserable for me. I'm 22+3 now and I've wanted to go running a few times in the past month or so, but now I'm worried about injury since I was away for so long (and my knees feel "squishy"). I've been keeping active with barre work during my pregnancy, and I hope to get back into my running groove postpartum!

I ran a half marathon at 12 weeks and a 5 mile race at 18 weeks. After that I ran 3 miles at a time-could have done more but it was during the middle of summer and was way too hot. I ran up to 35 weeks comfortably and then it just didn't feel good anymore-pain in my low belly/pelvis so I stopped and have just been walking 2-3 miles each day.

I think it's very personal. I run (handful of marathons and halfs) and with both of mine I stopped running around 25ish weeks because it just wasn't that comfortable anymore, so I didn't feel like I was getting much enjoyment/stress relief/whatever out of it. Through both of them I remained pretty active until the day I went into labor, just changed it up to a combination of elliptical, hiking, and yoga.
I'm friends with a handful of elite/sub-elite runners, and even for them, there is a mix of those that stop running (usually around the third tri, some earlier for various reasons) vs those who keep running at fairly incredible speeds (to me, slow for them) throughout.

I ran all the way through the 8th month with my first, but the pelvic separation made it unbearable to do it any more after that (I could barely walk, much less run). I definitely kept my pace slower and watched my heart rate.
With my 2nd, the pelvic pain came much earlier so I had to stick with light weight training instead.

I don't run too far, just 5ks. I did one the day before I found out I was pregnant, and will do my next one at about 20 weeks. They are both part of a challenge race so i will get an extra medal, the extra motivation that i need. I have been so tired lately that I haven't wanted to do hardly anything.

I've always been a runner. Ran my first marathon, then immediately started TTC. I had lost a bit too much weight during training and it took a long time to get it back, so eventually after TTC for about 8 months I was told to stop running all together to up my chances of conceiving. Then I went through IVF and all bets were off.
I wish I had kept at it, at least a few miles at a time a few times a week, because now that I'm 12 weeks along, it's just been too long to get back at it. I'm still dealing with exhaustion and morning sickness so all I can do is light prenatal yoga, and my heart rate is pretty high right now. SO jealous of the moms-to-be out there doing races with bumps, but everyone is different!
I've heard the general rule of thumb that you can generally continue what you were doing before without too much worry, just not to start anything more intense than you're used to. But definitely consult your doctor, especially since some are concerned about your temp getting and staying high during those long runs.

I'm an avid long distance runner. With DS1 I quit running once I hit halfway and never did any races. With DS2 I ran a half marathon in each trimester and regularly ran 5-7 SLOW miles on the treadmill maybe 4 to 5 times a week. I ran 7 miles the day before my water broke. Again as some of the others have said, I think it's fine to continue running at the same level as you were before you got pregnant. I absolutely loved running as much as I did with my second pregnancy, and felt it helped me bounce back to pre pregnancy weight after I gave birth. The worst part about running with pregnant was all the pee breaks I had to take!

I was jogging 3 miles till about 34 weeks. Slow and steady but then breathing and the tummy weight became an issue and I stopped. Your body will tell you when it's time to stop.

I ran 3-4 days week until third trimester. Now that I am approaching 37 weeks, I cut back to one day a week, 2-3 miles, slow. Running is getting a tiny bit uncomfortable (pelvic pressure, having to pee constantly), but I feel so good after a run that I keep up my one day a week. I try and supplement with more walks during the week.

Thank you for all of the feedback! I am going to just keep it up until my body tells me otherwise. So far so good! I certainly do feel better when I do it! Just sometimes need some motivation to get out there!

Not the same, but I am an avid biker and did that the entire time. Really different from a joint pain perspective, but energy wise I was able to keep pushing myself the entire time. I came out of pregnancy with less overall muscle, but increased heart muscle. At 3 months PP I'm stronger overall, and my stamina is about 80% of what it was prepregnancy.

Hi there! I am 13 weeks along and still running/jogging about 3 miles 5 times a week. I am definitely slower now but I'm hoping to continue all the way through if I can. I am experiencing incontinence which is SO ANNOYING! Thank you to the inventor of pads!

@TrailRunner: Hey!! I remember you from the POAS board!! Ran 20 miles today to finish up the training for my first full.. Bouts of nausea came on around mile 17.. I thought it was too much water but instead I got my BFP!!!
Hope you're doing well!!
kiwi / 585 posts
@jstalter: congrats!! When are you due? I remember my last run before I got my BFP as SO hard. I distinctly remember when I finished my husband was waiting on me (we used to run together but he always ran faster), and I remember telling him something was wrong bc my heartbeat was SO high! I hope you are doing well!

Hey running mamas-- trying to keep it consistent. Am at 16 weeks now and have a (very slow) half marathon planned at 26 weeks. Already kind of feeling like some support would be nice, but have never used a belly support band or anything. Anything you used that was helpful?
watermelon / 14467 posts
@mand4: I don't have anything because I chose to stop running after my 10k last month, but a friend of mine used a support belt during her last half-marathon at 27 weeks.

@avivoca Thanks! Good luck with lots of walking and staying active. I have been super lazy this winter, so the running is a little rough. Last preg, I felt awesome doing a half at 20 weeks, but this time all the largeness and aches are starting way earlier.
Any clue as to what brand?

I used this pregnancy support during my last pregnancy and run up until 32 weeks (http://www.mombodfitness.com/store/p3/Maternity_FITsplint%E2%84%A2.html). I felt much better when it was on.

Congrats @mand4 I am a runner but I never went beyond 6 miles at that stage of pregnancy. The bladder jostling just got to be too much! I had a friend who had good luck with kinesiology tape. There are lots of youtube videos out there to show how to tape it to help support the belly! Good luck at your half!
olive / 62 posts
@psw27: ooo! thanks-- didn't even think of the tape. also... it's yet to be seen if I'll make it past 6 then My bladder (and everything else) are less cooperative this time around!
@shantuck: thanks for the rec!

@mand4: You can do it! Just take it slow and walk every water stop! With a cute preggo belly you'll get nothing but admiration from everyone you see! Woohoo!
