I don't think there's much to be honest- unless you take your Tylenol and then have some honey and lemon in hot water, and you could do the bowl of steam thing- bend over a bowl of hot water and breathe in the steam to soften the phlegm/mucus so the cough is softer and more productive. Oh and extra vitamin C is safe, and will speed your recovery from the dose. It's a lousy time to get sick, isn't it!

@aunt pol: my throat is on fire! my husband has been sick all week and i was just waiting....and this comes on the heels of us both having norovirus last week. seriously!?

Ah no, I didn't make the connection that it was you! You poor thing! Obviously the norovirus left your immune system temporarily more vulnerable. I don't know if there's anything useful you can take for the throat besides plenty of yogurt and ice cream? Honey too, if you can swallow it cold...

Try gargling salt water. It works for me. Honey water and lemon to soothe. Feel better!

I was sick about 2 weeks ago and my doctor said I could take Robitussin and use cough drops. If you're concerned about the particular brand just buy them somewhere with a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to confirm those are okay.

Can you eat honey while pregnant? I thought you were supposed to avoid it due to botulism?
I had a cold once during my first pregnancy and it seriously sucked. I took Tylenol for fever and aches. And for sore throat, I found some natural cough drops at Trader Joe's. But they didn't work that well. Hot tea with lemon was a life saver.

I thought that cough drops were ok. I definitely took them when I had a cold, after googling whether they were safe for pregnancy. Of course I also took vitamin C and then realized later that it was a no-no. I think honey is fine for mom. You're just not supposed to feed it to babies until they're older.

@skibobrown: that's weird, I was told extra vit c was perfectly fine! If you take too much of it you pee it out anyway, it doesn't build up and cause harm. And there's a reasonable amount of it in prenatal vitamin supplements, so it can't be bad.
Honey is fine during pregnancy, and in children over one year old. It's best to buy a v good quality one, though, as many of the cheap store bought ones are from bees fed sugar to increase their output:(

My midwife cleared me to take cepacol - works amazing, numbs the throat right away. Aaaah.
