DH and I were both leaning towards wanting a particular gender. We had both thought we would wait, but could you imagine if at the birth we felt some form of disappointment. No way! So we decided we would find out now, just in case.

This was something my husband was adamant about not knowing gender, so we were team green. I totally did not think I could do it, but it was a lot easier that I had thought. With the exception of the last few weeks I got very anxious to learn what "it" was.
It was kind of fun to look at all the old wives tales and take guesses about what you thought it would be. Interesting to hear everyone's guesses in regards to gender. Also I enjoyed registering for all gender neutral "large" items...that way for our 2nd we won't have to put a boy in all girls items or visa versa. I would have been totally unable to register for gender neutral large stuff had I known gender (I think). I think another big positive is I find when you know the gender people always want to buy you clothing, but you need so much other stuff. I found at my shower I got very few outfits, and almost everything was purchased off my registry. It was so great knowing we had no big ticket items left to purchase. I definitely agree that there aren't as many gender neutral clothes out there, and you do get duplicates. I also have to say having gender neutral clothing I found myself buying lots of headbands after DD was born because she would look "boyish" in some of the brown outfits we got her. Honestly, I'm glad we did it this way; however, for our 2nd I think we are going to find out gender just to have the opportunity to experience it both ways.
It was also really an experience in the delivery room when my hubby got to tell me it was a girl! It was extra special to hear it from him rather than my doctor or sonographer.

Team Green here. It was really hard not knowing at some points, but really, I'd love Wombat boy or girl, so really gender didn't matter.

Now, I will admit that I was totally scared of having a girl (poor relationship with my mom), which is what Wombat turned out to be. Had I known we were having a girl, I think I would've been scared even more than I already was. Not knowing was kind of nice because I found out when my husband told me. Was I upset in the slightest when I found out I had a daughter? Not at all. She's absolutely perfect and I'd never trade her.

Plus, Team Green means gender neutral until everyone started buying her pink, which started happening less than 3 hours after her birth; I think it would've happened sooner if she'd been born later in the day.

I love all things girly and pink, so I had to find out. It wasn't an option, it was a must. If I had a girl and didn't have pink everywhere, there was going to be a problem.

So now that we have our little girl, who's room and wardrobe is full of pink, ruffles, and all things girly, I've agreed to go team green when we have baby #2. My hubby wants to, he wanted to for baby #1 but let me have my way. I figure next time around we already have all the pink things if we need it, so I'm not going to miss out, and it will be an awesome surprise when the baby comes.

I felt like finding out the gender helped me to feel like the pregnancy was a lot more real and concrete.
We'd lost our first pregnancy, and with the second one, I kind of never really wanted to get excited or think/talk about it very much during the first couple trimesters- I just really felt kind of removed from the whole process (other than the fact that I felt like I had the flu and the world's worst hangover rolled into one all day long).
For some reason, getting to use a gendered pronoun ("he" instead of "it" all the time) made a big difference to me psychologically in starting to bond with the baby and get excited about him.

@MsMamaBear: Yeah, I was surprised by the people who were bothered that they didn't know what gender our baby was.

It never even crossed my mind about the usefulness of gifts at a baby shower. Pre-TTC thoughts, I was definitely guilty of buying the mom-to-be lots and lots of pink frilly clothes (or hip little boy clothes) that she probably never even had the chance to use.

@junebugmama: that's been a concern of mine as well; I'm hoping for a particular gender, and maybe it's better to find out so that I'm not disappointed if it's not. Then again, I'm half-inclined to think that I'll be thrilled either way, despite my hopes...

Pro: If you get gender neutral stuff now you won't have to worry about buying all new stuff when you have another baby. I'm worried that if we have a boy next it's going to hurt our bank account!

Con: You can't personalize anything before the baby comes. We named our baby girl Rose, and naturally her room is full of Rose's. People went crazy giving us personalized gifts, it was awesome!

It's funny how opinionated family members are about this. Initially we thought we would be team green and ALL of my family was annoyed by this. We are leaning towards finding out for a few reasons:

- My DH is convinced it is a boy. What if it's not?
- I'm a planner.
- My family members will get us baby clothes for our shower, regardless of whether we know the gender. We'll just get a lot of yellow and green if we do not know.
- We're going to get gender neutral gear anyways. The only stuff that we would not get gender neutral would be baby clothes and maybe bedding and curtains.

we found out. my husband would have loved to be on team green but no way. i told him i could find out and he could be surprised but he wouldn't have that. i definitely wanted to be prepared. even knowing, i'm not into pinks and blues (made my babies red and gray hats). i want names picked out. etc.

I'm SO glad we're team green! It is hard at times, like when all of my prego friends are finding out, but I'm really excited about not knowing.

How many times do you get a chance like that to fully experience the birth and meeting of your baby?

Plus with us having a home birth this go round I was really gung ho about going all out with it.

SIL did kinds give us grief about it, but otherwise everyone has been really on board.

My only concern is accidentally finding out at our u/s.... I REALLY don't want to know. =/

I've always picked out names for both sexes anyways because there are those few times that gender prediction is wrong.... my sister was "supposed" to be a boy..... you can only imagine the confusion when my mom WOKE UP from her cesarean to "want to meet your baby girl?...." lol

I am team green, I have never wanted to know before birth. I have been to lots of deliveries as an NICU nurse, and there is a totally different vibe in the deliveries where the parents don't know the gender yet, there is a whole different level of anticipation, and I would hate to miss out on it.

Also, we really don't care what gender we are having, so that isn't a factor. I also love more neutral clothes (black, brown, grey, ivory) so I am excited to pick out those. I think that even if we knew the gender, it wouldn't change how we decorate the room, or the items we register for, because we would want to be able to use them for another child.

I have only gotten negative feedback from 1 or 2 people. Most people are really supportive and excited that we aren't finding out until the birth.

I haven't had a shower yet (because I am only 16 weeks), so I can't say anything about the gift situation. That is just a bonus, because even if we get a huge pile of gender neutral clothes, I know that this is just the right choice for us.

We arent even close to TTC but we will be team green all the way! I don't like pink and blue either (I like green & yellow) and I know that when you go green people are less likely to get you just baby clothes for your shower and more likely to get you stuff you actually need. My SIL was team green and she got way more registry stuff than clothes and was happy about that.

Team green here as well. I like baby green, yellow, browns, grays, and unisex clothing. But there are times when I see a cute girl outfit that I love! The kind that's not so frilly but just girly enough that it's definitely screams girl.

I hope to find out the gender, it'll make things easier.
