A friend of mine is right at the end of her first trimester. She experienced a painful cramp and some brown discharge and called me freaking out. Seeing as how I found out I'm pregnant just today, I don't know if this is normal, and she was wondering if I'd seen anything on the boards about this. Can anyone help me?

All the books say it's normal, but I would still probably go to the ER. I am so anxious about all of that! When I miscarried at 8 weeks, I had the slightest pink tinged mucus. Everything said it was normal, but I just couldn't let it go... And I was right... Not to scare your friend or anything, it's probably fine, but I would still go get checked out!!

Brown discharge is totally normal, it's just old period blood. As long as it's not red blood.

I would also go to the ER just in case. I had brownish spotting and a week later it turned bright red. I miscarried at 10 weeks (8 weeks). I dont want to scare your friend either but she should go sooner than later. Hope everything will be ok!

I had brown discharge my entire pregnancy and had a perfectly healthy baby girl. But my doc had me get an ultrasound EVERY time I had spotting so I would suggest your friend call her doc. I don't think going to the ER is necessary but she should call the on call doc and see what they say.

I would definitely call doctor though. I had a brown discharge for 2 weeks and then had a maaaajor SCH/threatened miscarriage. Probably fine, and I'm in minority, but I'd still call.

I had brown discharge that turned pink and then period red for 14 straight days, between weeks 6 and 8. It was so stressful but the baby was fine! Some women just bleed. You can release some old blood around the time your period would be, or just randomly. If she's concerned, she should definitely call the doctor, but this can be normal. A cramp could be round ligament pain.

I had brown discharge last week (at week 8) and it went away within a couple days.

I've had spotting this entire pregnancy due to a friable cervix. I'm 14.5 weeks. I spot brown or pink all the time, unfortunately. I usually call the doctor or go to the hospital if it turns red, but it's always my lovely cervix. If she's never had it before, I'd go get checked out... It can be totally normal, but its always good to have peace of mind!

I had it at times during my pregnancy, and it was normal.

Did she have sex recently? Or maybe ride a bike? The cervix is tender and can bleed a little when irritated. As long as it's brown, I wouldn't be concerned.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the advice and information. Yes she did have sex recently so I told her that may be a cause. She sees her dr tomorrow so hopefully it will just be nothing.

Oh if she just had sex, that can totally be it. If i were her, i'd just put my feet up and relax
