DH and I are heading to NYC in a few weeks to celebrate our 5th anniversary. We'd like to go somewhere nice one night to celebrate but I am a little overwhelmed by the number of restaurants to choose from so was hoping for some thoughts/suggestions. We are looking for good food first and foremost but ambiance is key too. We are willing to splurge some but it doesn't necessarily have to be a 4 star place...ideas?

We totally splurged and went to Le Bernardin for our anny, it was amazing. It is a whole dining experience. We have also been to Strip House, very good and ambiance was great, the best cheesecake I have ever had. Churrascaria Plataforma, very very good. We haven't been to too many places in NYC, I am sure a local would have great ideas for you. Hope you have a great time!

We're actually going out for our anniversary this Sunday to Babbo, one of Mario Batali's restaurants. We had dinner there the night we got engaged, too, so it's pretty special to us! The pasta and meats are amazing. We also love Danny Meyer restaurants and Gramercy Tavern is another favorite for special occasions - great food and service but not at all stuffy. Landmarc restaurants are also great for excellent food in a laid-back atmosphere. Avoid Gordon Ramsey at the London. Hideously uptight!!
If you are looking for any specific types of food, I may have more suggestions!
ETA: David Burke Kitchen and his other restaurants are known for being whimsical and fun too!

I don't live in NYC, but I really like Gramercy too. We also recently had a great meal/experience at Craft.

We went to The Riverview Cafe, and it was amazing! Very expensive though.

We also went to Craft and the food was good and the service was amazing without being uptight in any way.
We also went to Ko which is a different kind of dining experience - only 12 seats or something in the entire place and you sit up at a bar where you can watch the chefs make each course. It sounds super casual but the service is outstanding and the food is AMAZING. It's a set menu and I especially loved the wine pairing - it wasn't just wine but also included some delicious cocktails and really delicious champagne....LOVED IT!

I agree that any of the David Burke Restaurants are great. Le Cirque is great, Gramercy Tavern, 11 Madison Park, Telepan, Asiate...so many options!

I don't live in NYC but when we visit and want a special night Gramercy Tavern has always been a favorite and so has Babbo.

Thanks for all the ideas! I think we waited a little late-- looks like a lot of the places mentioned may be booked already. Has anyone done the lounge seating at Daniel? Also wondering about Cafe Boulud?
@Magnolia-- we like pretty much everything! I asked DH if there was anything he didn't want and he said "Asian fusion" (don't know where that came from...).

@abmamma: yeah if you really want to drop serious money i would say daniel, per se, etc.
How about stanton social or beauty and essex? You'd probably still be good to get a reservation there.
Eta: agree with david burke restaurants always being a win. I also just had a great experience at a new place, huertas, which has a brand new prix fixe menu every night

@abmamma: Try Bouley! They tend to have more reservations (I don't think they book up a month in advance like Babbo and Daniel - though I love Daniel I wouldn't have a meal in the Daniel lounge, it wouldn't feel like the full experience). DH and I went to Bouley a couple months ago and loved it. It's really romantic, and it's in Tribeca which is fun (stop at Bubble Lounge for a champagne cocktail before dinner!). Great and friendly service, and the MOST amazing bread (they have their own in-house bread baker and a whole bread cart that they wheel around with like 15 different kinds of bread).

Maybe take a look at the kings carriage house on the upper east side. It's not as well known as some of the others but it's really beautiful and the food is great.

Another one to check out is One if By Land, Two if By Sea. Ambiance doesn't get any more romantic than that one!

It's not on any lists of best restaurants or anything, but my absolute favorite is Pylos in the East Village. I also like Little Owl in the West Village, and Morimoto and Buddakan in Chelsea. We did the Morimoto tasting menu for my birthday one year and it was so great - though it would probably be considered Asian fusion so maybe not for you!

Agree with a lot of what's been said. del posto is also amazing, and I think you can get in. Eleven madison park is fantastic. A truly unique experience. Beautiful restaurant yet fun. Go there if you can afford it and you can get a ressy.

i love the standard grill at the standard hotel. with drinks beforehand at the bar upstairs!

Boulud Sud, Craftbar or Colicchio and Sons (better than Craft IMO), Hundred Acres, Barbuto, or Acme are all excellent!
Another one to check out is One if By Land, Two if By Sea. Ambiance doesn't get any more romantic than that one!
