I had good luck returning things to stores for store credit at Babies R Us and Target (even though it was outside the BRU return policy...having a registry there might help but it included off-registry items). I think Target has a $ limit on returns without receipts but they can frequently help.

I also had very few problems returning items at BRU and BBB as long as the exact item was sold there. I know that BRU it was returned at the lowest price from a certain time period (like 2 weeks or a month or something) so if it had been on sale you got the sale price. IF anything was on a registry you have, you'll get the price that the person paid for it back at BBB and it will show back up on your registry if you choose to use the registry like a receipt. Basically it doesn't hurt to ask. Just make sure the store has that EXACT item before you go in and it should be fine.

@lilyofthewest: Go ahead and start one at babies r us, it's worth it for the perks they offer for returns. I didn't even need to can with items I needed to return, I just added them to my registry and then marked them as purchased. Even better, they offer a one year warranty on items from your registry which came in handy since I wound up with a few duds.

Definitely create a baby registry at Target before you go, I was able to return a lot of baby-related stuff that wasn't even on my registry without a receipt. At BRU it was a pain, maybe they have changed their policy but at the time if I didn't have a receipt they gave me the lowest price on a merchandise card.
