But it's a bit spendy so I want to try to make sure it is something she'll actually like. Are kids generally into rocking horse/things? Or is this one of those things I think would be cute but she'll use it twice and be over it. What have your kids thought?

We got our nephew this for his first birthday and he LOVED it. It was a good investment, as his brother loved it too. I think she would get good use out of it and enjoy it.

My daughter ignored her rocking horse until about age 2. She was then really interested in it, but also scared of the sounds and movements. But once she realized it wouldn't hurt her, she was willing to ride it and pet it. It's not something she uses every day, but we got it as a gift, so the cost wasn't a factor for us.

@Mae: Kids I've encountered are generally very interested, but like PP said usually around 16 months and up (as per my experience working in a daycare in the toddler room).
The rocking dino is SUPER cute!!! The sale price is pretty good too, good find.

Dd loves her rocking horse....she only ever goes on for a few mins at a time but she has used it pretty much every day since she was 12 months (she's 18 mo now)

I remember my little sister (14 years younger) had a rocking cow similar to that, and she LOVED it. Even once she was older, she would find ways to incorporate it in her play. I don't remember my brother loving it *as* much, but she may have still been too possessive of it when he was the right age for it.

We got one of these on a whim at Costco and she does like for it for like 10 minutes. I'm sure once she gets older she'll like it even more. We still have to hold her on there and she hasn't quite mastered holding the handles! But I think it's a good investment.

My DD (2 y/o) and niece (15 months) LOVE theirs! DD is starting to try rocking it really hard now, but I think that's just her. Definitely saving it for #2. We're waiting now to get the BIG Radio Flyer rocking horse from her grandparent's house soon. It's on the 3rd grandkid loving it.

My daughter has a horse one that she was scared of for the first couple years and now she'll get on it but sometimes the neighing still freaks her out. However if it was more like the one you posted above (softer, quieter) I think she'd have liked it.

We have a rocking elephant from PBK and even though she only goes on for a few minutes at a time, she also cuddles it and makes it rock while standing next to it. I think she'll use it more as she gets older...but part of me wishes I'd gotten one of the cheap plastic ones they have at school because she rides like a wild child on those. She treats ours more like a stuffed animal you happen to be able to get on. But we got it for a steal (like 1/3 normal price) so I don't regret buying it.

I'll be the lone thumb down. We got one as a gift and DS was sort of scared of it! I'll try it again with DS2 and see how it goes...

@knittylady: same here with us. I got her an awesome tiger one off zulily, my brother got her a classic horse and lo's godmom got her an airplane. She was terrified of all 3 for over a year and now shows (at best) very mild interest only in the airplane one.

My daughter plays with my childhood rocking horse and loves it! She started playing with it around 18 months.

@Mae: We have the lady bug rocker from that company (Rockabye). It was a gift, given when LO was born, and she started using it when she was around 12 months. She's 18 months now and she loves it! A warning though, ours has 4 buttons that each play a different song, and they are super annoying and really low quality recordings that drive you nuts. Of course my LO likes to push them over and over again. So our rocker lives at grandpa's house. I think the rocker you linked has the same songs, so just be warned.

I should also mention is that at 21 months my daughter is capable of rocking it so hard that it goes over backwards (has happened twice) ...so make sure use is supervised and that there is some sort of soft surface behind it.

thank you all so much for the insight! I know 12 mo might be a little young for it but she won't have another real gifting holiday until she is like 20 mo so we're trying to get toys that she can grow into a bit

My son is 1 and quite a way off touching the ground wih his feet. He likes when we sit him on it though.
