I've gotten that question a few times. It's hard to be nice while responding. I actually loved my job, I love my degree. But I love being home with LO more, and since DH can support us I'm lucky enough to be able to do so. Oh, and the people asking don't have kids so they don't realize that being home with LO isn't all rainbows and butterflies.
One friend asked me if I'll keep having babies so I don't have to work. Yes, that's a good reason to have a baby.

Not really. I think in this area, people assume that SAHMs either didn't make enough to make child are worth it or they have a rich husband. My reason is neither. I really did want to stay home.

Wow, I don't think I would be very nice in my response to that at all! I choose to be a SAHM because it is the best thing for my child and it is by far, the hardest job I have ever had. I don't get to take a break if I'm tired or stressed out and my job doesn't end at 5 pm. I also don't get a day off and if I half ass my job, there are massive consequences.
Ugh, that question would make me irate! Fortunately, no one has ever questioned my motivation and most people commend my decision. People are so rude sometimes....

My ex husband doesn't ask me this, but he does assume it. It drives me nuts. You'd think he'd be happy that I'm able to spend my time with DS, but whatever.

My sister REGULARLY makes the comment, "well if you didn't REFUSE to work, you would be able to afford to come visit family more often." (we live on the other side of the country, and she makes these comments because they want to see my son, not because I want to go home). It. Drives. Me. INSANE.

No one has asked me this but I feel like some people do assume this. This is the most difficult (rewarding...but difficult) job that I've ever done. It's something I've always always wanted but, honestly, some days I miss working outside the home.

When I told someone I wasn't happy as a sahm she got offended and said I should be grateful my husband could afford to have me home.... But she had no idea our financial situation- and part of the reason I was unhappy at home was because of money stress! Anyway... I hate those types of questions!!

Everyone tells me that ill get bored and want to go back to work. Ummm probably not, but thanks! I think most of our friends thinks DH makes a lot more than he does bit we still get help from my family and I have dividend payouts from investments that help.

I have a friend who actually did have kids so that she didn't have to work outside the home so it does exist. She wasn't shy about telling everyone this.

There are a lot of SAHMs around here so I don't get too many questions, but a few college friends have asked me questions about why I want to stay home. Honestly, part of it is that I don't want to work outside the home. I was never really fulfilled with previous jobs and love that I'm able to spend my time on what does fulfill me, which is being home with LO and taking care of the house and cooking, etc. (Of course I know working moms do all that too ;-))

Never had that question. Although, I've had a lot of people act like I can stay home because we can afford it. Ummm, no, really, we can't, but I don't have the degrees or qualifications that would put me in a job that would pay more than the daycare costs, so home I stay.

@Mrs. Pen: UGH! I'm not completely happy as a SAHM either, I think I would be a better, saner mom if I had a part-time job outside the home. Not that staying at home isn't satisfying, but you know what I mean. Comments like that drive me up the wall.

@FarmWifeGina: I don't always love my job but I love having that separate time for me and I love the paycheck! I am a better mom and enjoy my time with J more. If anything I'm blessed more to have the option of a part time job! But yeah that comment hurt because it was accompanied with a lot more insensitive things.. To make it worse it was someone in my family!

Holy crap, I can't believe someone said that to you. I guess I'm lucky to be surrounded by people who recognize the value in having a stay at home parent, and who know how lucky I am to get to choose to do it.

I was a sahwife before we even had kids so.... Having kids didn't impact my working (or lack of). That is a rude question...and being a SAHM is work...really hard work, really time consuming...exhausting...like any other job! Plus it's 24/7 with no personal days!

My FIL has actually told me I should hurry up and finish having kids so I can hurry up and go back to work...like he's the one footing the bill for me being a SAHM...
