My 20 month old has been on this screaming kick for the past month or so. And it is usually when she doesn't get her way. But its not a cute, aww look at her scream. It is seriously an ear piercing, think you are hurting her scream. We have tried everything from talking to her calmly, raising our voices, ignoring her, etc. but she doesn't stop. Anyone have any tips that worked? I know I can't have the only screecher!

My oldest who is 5 now used to do this around 4 years of age. I used to just take him to time out where he can scream. It helped him calm down if I just ignored him. With my 2 y.o., I'll put him in time out and he'll call for me THE ENTIRE TIME... THE ENTIRE TIME! Did I say ENTIRE TIME?! It's almost as bad as the screaming.... :\ I find that every child is different and you just have to find the best discipline style that works for you.

No advice but were here too at 22 months on some days... It's exhausting

If screaming started, I would walk away immediately! That usually works, unless we're out in public.

No advice, but I can commiserate. DS started this LAST YEAR, and still does it. I have constant tinnitus now, especially when I'm laying down, trying to go to sleep. We've tried ignoring it, distractions, everything. It's just his preferred means of communication, but damn, it hurts.

My daughter (26 months) has done this consistently for quite a while. Luckily(?), in our case, it is usually only a single scream right after she doesn't get her way. After the one scream, she usually moves on to other ways of carrying on -- typically throwing herself on the floor and crying. We've been talking a lot lately about feelings, and she now understands that she screams when she is sad or mad. We tell her how there are other ways to express those feelings, and she says she understands. So far this hasn't translated into actions on her part -- the screaming still happens -- but I'm still hoping.
