Who are your immediate family members and who are your extended family members?
Please vote for one of each option and leave comments below so I can prove him wrong lol.....
FYI: This is not a serious fight between Dh and I, just curious.

At first I went with the "everyone under the same roof," but then I decided that I felt like if I told my husband we were only telling our immediate family about something that it would include my sister and parents.
Is there an option to make my immediate family the people under my roof + my side of the second choice (i.e. not my in-laws) excluding grandparents. I'm guessing that makes me a bad person....

my immediate family: my husband, my parents, my brother
my extended family: grandparent, aunts, uncles, cousins, ILs of all varieties

@mrs. bird: Love that you had the same answer - I don't feel as bad anymore!

Our immediate family is me, him, our two children. Everyone else is extended family.

I consider my immediate family to be spouse, parents, siblings. Not sure where grandparents fit? I consider extended family to be aunts, uncles, cousins.

My response isn't covered by a poll option. To me:
Immediate family: My husband, our parents, and our siblings (and our LO once s/he arrives).
Extended family: Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

I consider my immediate family to be DH, LO, my parents and my sister. DH's immediate family is me, LO, his parents and his sister.
Extended family are our grandparents, aunts, cousins, etc.

My immediate family I consider my husband and son (and dog), plus our parents and siblings.

i started to say under our roof but than realized that wouldn't cut it bc I include my parents and siblings as immediate family. I include grandparents as extended family.

I"d say my immediate family includes those I live with now (DH, LOs) and those I grew up with (my parents, sister). Not sure if I'd include my sister's husband and future children as immediate family though. Extended family is everyone else (my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins).

I say "nuclear family" for the same roof definition! Otherwise, I think "immediate" refers to all 1st degree relatives.

I think that family that has ever lived with me is immediate family. So my parents, sisters, my husband and my LO. My grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins and inlaws are extended family. And I think this would change for DH and LO. For LO, her immediate family is probably just me and DH.

Immediate - parents/grandparents/brothers/sisters/LOs everyone directly above or below me on the tree. Extended - anyone that you have to make a lateral move to get to (except siblings).

We consider our immediate family: DH, myself, the LO's, my parents, his parents, his brother and his daughter, my brother, my SIL and their two kids, plus my sister, BIL and their 3 kids.
At first I was thinking just my family of four plus my siblings and parents, but then I thought about it more. Grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins are extended family.

I consider "immediate family" to have 2 levels, depending on what the question is about my immediate family. Sometimes that will just mean me, DH and LO and sometimes that will mean our parents and siblings.
I always think of aunts/uncles and cousins as extended family.

How I view it is that my immediate family changed when I got married; it went from being my parents and siblings to being my DH and children.

Immediate family counts our siblings and parents.
My mom and sister are "directly" related (immediate) while an aunt or cousin is only related to me through another family member (extended).

If immediate family is everyone living under the same roof, do you suddenly become extended when you move out of your parents house? I don't think so.
I consider it to be anyone with a direct relationship. so parents, children, siblings. My aunt isn't my immediate family, but she is my mom's.
I voted for the second one, but I disagree. My nieces and nephews aren't immediate family. just my siblings and mom are.

@PurplePumps: Great definition!
@yoursilverlining: I totally get that. Its just gets confusing sometimes. Like when the insurance company only covers your immediate family. Being DH and Lo's.

My immediate family is my husband, LO (once she's born), our pets, my parents, brother and my grandparents.
Extended family: aunts, uncles, cousins of various levels and my in laws.

I count parents and my/DH's siblings as immediate family - then aunts/uncles/cousins as extended family

@wonderstruck: This is how I was taught. Once you move out and get married have kids etc they become your immediate family and everyone else is extended. It's very interesting to see how different everyone's views are. This just might not be one of those right/wrong answers.

Our immediate family (or I guess Liam's) is those who live in our house.
My immediate family is my parents and brother. His immediate family is his parents and sister.
I guess I think about it in two ways!

Just keep in mind that the definition of your immediate family is different than your parents, just like your child's are differnt than yours.
To me immediate is one degree of separation, parents, siblings (and their families under the same roof), spouse and children. Grandparents could be included in this.

Good question!
I guess I would say our immediate family is Me, DH, DD, our parents and siblings (and by default, their spouses and children). Grandparents maybe? They're more like immediate and a half. lol. Extended family is aunts/uncles/cousins and beyond.

Immediate- spouse, kids, parents, grandparents, siblings
Extended- aunts, uncles, cousins, etc

@wonderstruck: @MamaPhoenix: This is what I was going to say. It changes when you get married and have LOs. For most of my life, my parents and my sister were my immediate family. Now, DH and future LO are my immediate family, and our parents/in-laws/siblings have become extended family.
My grandparents + aunts/uncles + cousins have always been and continue to be extended family.
pomegranate / 3768 posts
Immediate: DH, LO, my parents and my siblings, his parents and his siblings.
Extended: Aunts, uncles, cousins

My company defines immediate family as spouse, siblings, children, grandparents in their bereavement policy.
pomelo / 5678 posts
It depends from what/ whom the viewpoint stands:
My dad just passed and I was his immediate family (myself and my siblings/his kids, -he was divorced- were his immediate family).
My immediate family is DH and LO.

@Mrs.KMM: this is what I consider to be true.
In our bereavement policy at work.I believe they consider parents, siblings, and grandparents as immediate family. I believe aunts and uncles are extended (as well as cousins etc). Of course spouse and children are immediate.

Us, our kids, our siblings and parents are our immediate family.
Grandparents, aunts, etc. are extended.

Immediate family: DH, LO, my parents, my siblings. DH would say the same (his parents, his sibling).
I don't know where I'd stick my grandparents. They are kind of immediate and not quite extended, somewhere in between.
Extended family: aunts, uncles, cousins.
pineapple / 12053 posts
My immediate is me, DH, DD, my parents, my siblings. DH's includes his parents and siblings instead. DD's immediate family is me and DH.

I couldn't really vote, because my immediate family includes my husband and children, as well as my parents and siblings.

In a medical context (to identify risk factors) immediate family typically means your biological parents, siblings and children. Anyone/everyone else is extended family or family by marriage.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
DH's work allows him time offin the case of death in an immediate family member. They define that as spouse, children, parents, and grandparents, including spouses parents and grandparents. So that's what I think is immediate.
Extended is aunts, cousins, uncles, etc.
nectarine / 2521 posts
I just told someone today that there are 5 birthdays in my immediate family - in my mind that means our parents and siblings and their children. Extended to us is everyone else.
