immediate family is "us", the nuclear family...me, DH, our kids. But it also typically means our parents and siblings.
Extended is aunts, uncles, gparents, cousins.....anyone more than one tree branch away

@MamaPhoenix: I would say that my "immediate family" includes my DH, DS, parents, and siblings. Not my in-laws or anything else. However, I would say that my parents are DS's "extended" family, not his immediate family, so I guess it's generational to me? So DS's immediately family is/will be DH and myself, any siblings he has, and his spouse and/or offspring.
