Should I apply for this job?

I haven't been overly happy at my job in awhile. I love the work but the atmosphere sucks. I don't like the people anymore. All my favorite people left. Communication sucks.

But we are TTC. I'm in Canada so I get a year of maternity leave. My plan was to start job hunting about 6 months into the mat leave and just not go back to work. But I didn't know it would take us so long to conceive.

There's a job opening for a place just down a few blocks from where I work now. Location is a huge factor because I carpool with my husband. We wouldn't need any adjustments there. Lots of job opportunities I've seen just don't work with the location.

But what if I apply and I find out I'm pregnant in a week? I also have a trip planned at the end of July and would need a week off. (Everything is booked). Is now not the right time? Should I wait and go with the original plan of job hunting on maternity leave?

I would apply! Worry about the rest when it happens. Does changing jobs affect your maternity leave, in Canada?

I'd go for it now. I've applied for jobs with known vacations planned and they have always accommodated my plans. With Canadian leave, don't you need to work 600 hours to qualify for the leave? If you got pregnant as soon as you got hired, you should make that. That's just 15 weeks of work at 40 hours per week, right? I'm American, but that's what I've come to understand and you can correct me if I'm wrong.

The only reason I'm holding off is because a) I'm American and b) if I leave now, I won't qualify for any kind of leave at all unless a future company is willing to give me some time off, and by law, they don't have to since I wouldn't have worked for them for a year.

Apply!

I wouldn't worry about the vacation, if you are offered the position just be up front about it. More than likely you wouldn't start until around then anyways.

@regberadaisy: @avivoca: I think there may be different rules per province regarding maternity leave and how all that would be handled. I would definitely double check on that.

If I didn't get pregnant this cycle, maybe we would hold off TTC until after I found out if I got the job or not.

job applications aren't due until the end of the month so I could wait to see if AF shows. She may come the 25t .

Do you have to be employed for a certain amount of time for the leave to be effective, or does that not matter? If it doesn't matter, I'd apply.

Is location the only reason you'd want that job, or are there other compelling reasons? If you think it would be a great fit and also great location, I'd apply now and hold off on TTC for a short while. You could definitely just negotiate a start date after your trip if you get the job.

@catlady: location is a huge plus but I also feel like it's a stable job. The job I'm at now got a bit rocky a few months ago and I think everyone was worried about the future of this branch. It's better now, but who's to say it won't happen again? It's one of the main reasons I didn't plan to work here forever.

This company I'm thinking about applying for is one of the few in my line of work, in the area I'm wanting to work, that I don't think will be bought out or shut down.

@looch: you do have to work a certain amount of time and I don't know if the hours would transfer from my job now or not. I would find out before I did anything.

I'd definitely apply! As someone who put off changing jobs and planning vacations for 5 years due to infertility (and then got pregnant two weeks before finally switching because I did not want to put my life on hold anymore), I can definitely say (1) I wish I had switched sooner and (2) while not ideal being pregnant at the start of a job , it still worked out fine. If i did apply and didnt get pregnant this cycle, would it look bad if I got pregnant only a few months after being hired?

@Shizaz: I got pregnant two months after starting this job and no one thought anything of it. With the length of the pregnancy, I went on maternity leave just one month shy of my one year anniversary.

@Shizaz: Definitely sounds like you should apply then. I wouldn't worry if you got pregnant within a couple months. You'd probably wait a few more months to announce anyway, and then as @DenverMom said, it could be almost a year before you actually took a leave.

Thank you everyone. I think I'm going to apply. I'm going to inquire about the maternity leave situation and also maybe wait to see if AF shows up before I apply. If maternity leave isn't an issue then I will probably apply anyway.

Yikes, it's all kind of scary. I got this job right out of school and have been working here over 5 years. I'll have to brush up on my interview skills.

Definitely apply! I officially started my job while on mat leave (Canadian, government job) so they had to hire somebody to cover it for six months, then I was there for three months and got pregnant. When I go back I will have worked one year out of the two and a half that I've had the job for. And the job before this (at the same department) I also got pregnant two months after starting. (Typing this out, no wonder my director thinks I'm constantly getting pregnant) Also, what if it takes a few months? Plus the nine that you'll be pregnant for. Don't suffer for maybe a year or more at a job you don't like just in case.

Oh, and yes, it's just 600 hours of employment, it doesn't matter where.

Definitely apply and don't worry so much! It sounds like accruing leave wouldn't be a concern so I don't think it is a big deal to be newly pregnant and starting a new job. As others have said, its 9 months to cook the baby so you'll be there for a while before you went out on leave.

Apply! I interviewed 20 wks pregnant and took mat leave after working for 3 mo. Maybe they grumbled but it worked fine!

@Shizaz: Apply! I am in Canada too and your hours count (600hrs to qualify) even if you change jobs so it is not an issue from that side of things. All that matters is that in the last 52 weeks before your maternity leave starts you have worked the 600 hours, it can even be a combination of more than one work place (ie. People who have 2 part time jobs)

However, I would absolutely not ask about maternity leave when applying. I know in theory they shouldn't hold it against you but there is no need. Even if you got pregnant soon you have 9 months before the baby arrives.

As for the vacation I would just let them know as you go through the interview process that you have scheduled a vacation that would need to be accommodated. I have done this before with new jobs and have never had any issues.

Canadian here!

I would 100% apply if I were you. Even if you change jobs you can get mat leave as long as you have the 600 hours

Well AF came so maternity leave isn't an issue. I'm going to apply and I'm terrified! I haven't been on an interview in like 6 years.
