I know it's not recommended that pregnant women change litter boxes. Should I worry about my kitten scratching me? She's 5 months old and very playful. She likes to hide around corners and leap on my legs with her claws out and things like that. She also likes to wrestle and kick me with her back feet. She doesn't scratch as much as she did when she was younger and it's never out of anger. I'm just wondering if I should discourage her from playing rough?

And you don't want her doing that around a baby!

That's gonna hurt soon! Do you trim her nails? I would work on that. And disengage her any time her claws are out. But make sure she has stuff to scratch on. My cats never rough play with me like that and I always directed them towards appropriate stuff to scratch. Granted, they're 7 now, so they're pretty calm, but their nails only get me when they're making biscuits and they're too long

@blackbird: I've never trimmed a cats nails before. I should give that a try! She does have a scratching post and plenty of toys to play with.
Thanks guys! It's time to get serious with training. She'll eventually calm down and be lazy like my other cat, but right now she's definitely full of energy.

I don't think there's any risk of toxoplasmosis from scratches (you have to make contact with feces), but I agree that you'll want to work on that well before baby arrives. And there could be some small risk if she steps on poo in the litter box or something (IF she's carrying toxo).

@Leialou: oh wow well my cats nails get SUPER sharp and curved so I definitely trim them to blunt the edge. Otherwise, they poke holes in my leg when they make biscuits! They're too dull to really do anything otherwise. Plus if they take a swipe at E, they don't snag her clothes or skin

It's also important for the cat that you trim them, if it's an indoor cat. They'll snag on carpet and things and it's really uncomfortable for them. It's easy to trim them. If they don't like it, wrap them in a towel and just pull out one paw at a time. If you press in the middle of their paw, their claws will come out. Just don't cut down into where it's white and opaque.
