For instance, if you name your first child a very obviously German name, would it sound weird to then name your next child a very English name? Would they forever clash?
I like one German (girls) name very much, but all our other name choices are distinctly English.
My background is German, Czech and English. My DH's family is Czech.

I don't think so! LO's name is Gaelic and I'm thinking of going German for #2 if it's a boy. Husband is German/Irish and I'm Chinese.

If this LO is a girl our children will have names from very different origins. The girls name we have picked out is very Japanese (DH is half). DS's name is of English origin which is part of my background. I think the two names sound fine together dispute being from such different origins.

I think there's enough diversity now that most people just pick a name regardless of origin. My name is Greek, my brother's Irish and we're Filipino. I know many others with siblings with names that originate from all over and I personally don't think it's odd or mismatching at all.

I don't think so. The only time I think it might be odd is if one name is quite ethnic/unusual and the other is very traditional (like Umberto and Billy). But even then, I wouldn't really think of it. The kids are individuals, after all!

I personally picked out similar names, like all traditional English names because I wanted them to "go together". I'd feel odd having one kid named Jedidiah and one named Rylan, but that's just me.
Ultimately, you have to be comfortable with it.

I'm Chinese, and DH is Vietnamese. We gave LO an American name. My in-law's family keeps telling us that our next kid has to have a Vietnamese name and our third has to have a Chinese name. Umm.. no. That's not fair. My name is very much Chinese, but my sisters lucked out with names that fit better into American society (Lynn, Lee, and May). I was always jealous of them because my parents chose such a Chinese name, and I was ridiculed in school. I would never do that to my kids, especially having one with a completely normal name and two kids with very Asian names.

I don't think they have to be from the same origin. In fact, DS's name goes back to ancient times, and S's name was English. We just pick names we like without regard to its origin.

I don't think they should necessarily be of the same origin, but they should sound nice together! And if you're going with a theme, for God's sake, make sure they all fit! I know a family with 4 kids....Joy, Hope, Sunshine....and Steve.

In your case (German vs. English) is day you can totally get away with it. For us, Arabic is our only option. We named our son an Arabic name and were stickin to that for all our kids.

Not, necessarily. I always think of Kelly Ripa's kids: Michael and Juaquin. The names are very different.
Pick what you like. Your children are individuals and will likeky goIinto the world on their own. They won't always be paired with a sibling.
