I went to my 20th week ultrasound and the tech found that I have a single umbilical artery in the umbilical cord. Has anyone else heard of this?

From what I remember, a few other posters have some experience with this. I could be thinking of other umbilical artery issues, but this does sound familiar. Hopefully they can chime in. I do know its the most common umbilical abnormality though.

It's nice to hear that's it's at least somewhat common. I had never heard of it before but the good thing is the doctor wasn't too concerned but we are going for a level II ultrasound on Friday to get a better look at her heart.

I / my baby has one. I'm 30 weeks pregnant. According to my doctor, it's no big deal as long as there's nothing else abnormal. He referred to it as a "soft marker" for potential abnormalities.
They found a few other potential issues with my baby, so I'm seeing a maternal fetal medicine specialist along with my OB. But, don't stress too much over it! It can all be very normal.

They think mine only has 2 at one end...one of the arteries just kind of craps off into nothing...the tech told me it's very common and does not cause issues typically. That it just means you'll get a few extra scans and that if the baby seems to stop growing well at the end, we'll have an earlier c-section. She really made it sound like absolutely no big deal, though.

A friend of mine just had a baby and had this issue. He was very, very small... 4.5 lbs kind of small. But there were some other issues that contributed more than the single cord artery.

Thank you all for the responses. I was stressing out alot when the Dr. first told us thanks to google but I'm hoping all is good with our baby's heart. I can't wait to see our her again on Friday.

My good friend had this - it resulted in some extra ultrasounds but ultimately nothing further. Her baby was born a few days late and was almost 9 lbs : )

It can be a soft marker as Krunrun says, but hopefully it's nothing. I see many more babies with a 3 Vessel cord than 2, but I have seen some healthy 2 Vessel babies.
