I had my first ultrasound last Friday at 7 weeks 1 day. Embryo was measuring 6 weeks 6 days with a heartbeat of 146. The gestational sac was only measuring 5 weeks 4 days. This seems to be uncommon and Googling small gestational sac turns up some scary statistics (the worst ones being when the crown rump length and gestational sac are <5mm apart... mine was exactly 5mm). I had my first OB appt today and the doc was unconcerned. She did a quick in office ultrasound and said the baby is measuring 8 weeks and everything looks fine. The sac still looks small to me but she did not measure. Does anyone have any experiences with a small gestational sac and how did it turn out?

I haven't dealt with this specific situation but I had a lot of things come up throughout my pregnancy and I found it was best to just stick with the mantra that I trust my doctor very much and if she wasn't concerned, I don't need to be concerned.

I second what @Truth Bombs said. No experience with that specifically, but as long as you overall trust your doctor, I'd rely on what she says. In my experience, if something looks bad, they'll tell you. They don't want it to be a nasty shock for you later. I really hope everything turns out perfectly for you!

I had this happen to me and unfortunately I miscarried. My differences were a little bigger - I had a 7w4d fetus with a good heartbeat but a sac of only 5w4d. The baby died at around 8 weeks but then ironically the sac had grown appropriately. In my googling, I remember seeing cases where the sac just caught up and everything was fine. Sadly, only time will tell. My doc thinks it was something chromosomally wrong with the pregnancy from the start.

Smaller gestational sac does happen, and if you're OB isn't worried about it yet, I'd hold onto that and go with it until otherwise.
Like TidyBee, my smaller gestational did not have a good outcome, but at my first appt, she did say sometimes, a smaller gestational happens.

@Truth Bombs: Good advice, so hard to relax even when things are going perfectly in pregnancy much less when anything could be wrong. I'm trying though!

@Tidybee: @Alivoo01: Thank you ladies for sharing your stories and I'm sorry for your losses. I wish she would've measured the sac to know if its at least increasing proportionally but the only thing I could do anyway would be wait so maybe its for the best.

@clover: if you don't mind me asking, did things continue to progress well? I just found out something similar (although I don't know the numbers), and will have a follow up ultrasound in 2 weeks.

@runnerd: So far, so good. I am currently 24 weeks and baby girl looks healthy. The maximum vertical pocket of amniotic fluid at the anatomy scan was 5 (normal is 2-8) so everything is on track and the sac caught up/filled out. I really hope your gestational sac catches up as well, its so hard not to obsess over it. Fingers crossed for you and your baby!
