Anyone do something besides a smash cake for a first birthday?
I'm looking for some ideas besides pulling cake and icing pieces out of my baby's hair.

It's only once! I'm planning on giving her a bath right after, so it won't be a big deal.
I've seen some really cool fruit arrangement "cakes" though. Check Pinterest!

@Arden: I'll check that out. Washing his hair is really a process that wouldn't be well handled/timely during a party.

I think I've seen people give cut up strawberries and some whip cream on the high chair tray before. Would that be too difficult to get out of his hair?
Found the blog post I remember seeing. She made it the number 1 for his first birthday: http://thatwifeblog.com/2011/04/19/t1-day/

@Mrs. Polish: hmm.. Yes I was anti smash cake. We did it after dinner on her actual bday, at home, alone. Not at the party. Then straight into the tub.
How about a doljabi?? the Korean thing where they choose something. I wrote about it on the blog!

@Mrs. Polish: I lazy too which is why I didn't. But here. Becuz I lava you.

@mrs. wagon: we're so doing that. White parents, black child, Korean birthday party. We're so worldly.

@Mrs. Polish: I love it maybe even more than I love you. You can do other items. I'm guessing dad will want a tiny little barbell.

@Mrs. Polish: make sure you have a redhead and a blonde present. Also, when you clink glasses, shout "mazaltof!" And then you'll be 100%.
& no I haven't any useful suggestions. I swore my kid wouldn't smash a cake and then...I look over and he has cake. He ended up taking a shower mid-party.

@mrs. wagon: we even have a barbell rattle. This is going to be so awesome. Now the question is, what culture do I chose for his clothes???

@Mrs. Polish: Seems like you're set but I did a watermelon "cake" with a bit of unsweetened whipped cream on top. Not much mess!

Obviously you know your son best, but you never know how they will react. We had a smash cake and L wanted nothing to do with it! I think she maybe put one finger on it. So you could have one and potentially still have a clean kid on your hands.

i just let my kid have greasy hair for the rest of the party.... but your cultural extravaganza sounds fun!

How about mochi ice cream? Or just plain mochi with sweet red bean filling? Its sticky and chewy and sweet but not terribly messy. MIL runs a daycare and she always asks people to bring rice krispie treats instead of cake bc it makes a mess. Maybe you can make a fancy looking rice krispie cake decorated with M&Ms or something and make a small one for your son to eat. Or how about mini donuts or donut holes? Powdered donuts would make a mess cute enough for pictures, but wont really mess up his hair.

@gingerbebe: rice krispies are a great idea! Thanks
@cheesetomywhine: this watermelon cake sounds interesting too. I'll have to see if the store has any this time of year. Thanks

How about a giant rice krispy cake? That way instead of having to bathe him you will only have to pick out a billion rice krispiesout of his hair. Actually maybe you can just comb them out. You're welcome!
ETA: Just saw I am not the first genius suggesting the rice krispies!

@anonysquire: @Mrs. Polish: @gingerbebe: I was about to say rice crispy treat! Except I would make it with Cheerios...because nothing in this sweet world gets them as excited as Cheerios. #weirdos

In case anyone wonders, I gave him a cupcake with minimal icing and didn't let him play with it too long. He enjoyed it.

@Mrs. Polish: the convo between you, @mrs. wagon: and @CupQuakeWalk: is cracking me up!
