...but my 22 month old still bathes in his whale tub, on the sink. I got pregnant when he was 7 months old so by the time he was old enough to switch to our tub I was too big to bathe him hunched over kneeling outside the tub. Now it's just habit but he's really getting too big and it's dangerous. Any tips on switching over? How did your LOs like the big people tub?

Ha! Not embarrassing! Everyone does what works!! We switched my son to the big tub super early, like 6 months... But I would recommend a non slip mat on the bottom of the tub until he adjusts. Toys are generally a must!

Has he ever gone swimming? If so, I'm sure he'll adjust super easily! We switched our guy pretty early because the sink one wasn't working for us, but he generally has always liked the tub. He plays and swims around. What would your concerns be about his transition?

My lo took awhile to switch too. She gas a transitional tub, we took the infant recliner out and she was in a mini tub, and she doesn't do well with change so we procrastinated. She screamed in the big tub at first, but once she realized she could splash and play she was happy. Try some new tub toys for a distraction.

@travellingbee: he's never gone swimming but he loves to splash in our inflatable pool. We tried it once when he was younger, maybe at a year and he was scared of the showerhead. I've rinsed him off in our tub a few times and it's hit or miss, sometimes he loves it sometimes he's climbing on me to get out.
Do I get in there with him? Doesn't your back hurt? I have glass sliding doors so it's super annoying. How do you make sure his bottom is clean?

I am like you--my two LO's are 17 months apart. I don't know if this would help you with your older one to transition in the tub, but I bathe the baby first (7 months now) in a couple inches of water (she can also sit up on her own) and then unplug the drain. Or, I keep the water running and give her a quick bath that way, and then I take her out, dry her off, change her really quick and keep the water running for my son's bath. If you aren't comfortable putting him in the tub alone, I have heard good feedback from friends who put the laundry basket in the tub for support! Toys and occasional shaving cream in the tub is so fun for him.

Would it maybe be easier if you got in the tub with him so you don't have to hunch? Or if he showered with you?

@matador84: I need to revamp my bedtime routine with these two, I am solo a lot so the baby is usually just crying while I do the big boy.
also another reason I've put off switching to the big tub, I need to get big bro done ASAP so I can get lil sis. I've never thought of bathing the little one first, maybe I'll try that!! I just wanted to share my invention. I had a really small kitchen sink so we turned the laundry tube into a spa for our lo. It even has a shower head. she's showered since birth and loves it. I will be keeping her in it forever!!!! lol

@MamaChin: I feel your pain! I solo 5-6 days a week every week. It has been a lot of trial and error for me. I don't give my older one a ton of time in the bath because I just don't have the time since I have a ton of other stuff to do--baths take 15 mins max for both kids!

@MamaChin: I had a friend that deflated the inflatable pool some and stuck it in their tub for bath time! Eventually their LO for used to the idea of the tub and they took it out and no problems since.

I just get in the tub with LO (12 months). It's easier on my back and I feel like it keeps the climbing/exploring to a minimum.

@MamaChin: I have sliding glass doors in my kids bathroom tub and am wondering about bathing M. D showers himself, so it hasn't come up, yet since we moved in. M is little, though. Your son probably will be able to handle it a little better

We transitioned Xander to the tub before he turned one I think. But we did it by putting his infant tub (that goes over the sink) into the big tub. Just be warned, it definitely took a few days to transition! He was scared!!! But after three days, he was totally fine with it and it was smooth sailing from there. We just recently (18 months) got rid of the infant tub and now just use the big tub as is. He didn't mind that transition at all. It went very smooth! Good luck!

I would put a mat on the bottom so its not slippery and then put him in a DRY tub and then slowly add water - maybe just do 2 inches the 1st time and see how he does.
As for washing I have them stand up and wash them and then sit down and rinse off.
We don't have glass siders but maybe if you put a bath towel over the edge so when you lean on it its more comfortable?
DH wont give baths because he says it hurts his back but the only time you really need to lean is when you are washing or rinsing - the rest of the time I sit on the floor next to the tub.

@MamaChin: We had glass doors that we took down and put up a shower curtain. I couldn't imagine bathing LO with the doors still up. We will put them back up when we sell the house.
Also, LO likes the bath better when I put her in, then start running the water.

We moved her to the big tub around 6 or 7 months. We started with the infant tub in the big tub. Then around 8 or 9 months she was fine in the big tub.

We did the infant tub on the bathroom counter til five months or so. We moved to a bigger toddler tub in the big tub until 11 months. THen we transitioned to the big tub. He flipped out for a few times, but was ok after that--

@MamaChin: Not embarrassing! My 14 month old is still in an infant tub inside the big tub. I keep her in it because it's so small and has low sides, she hasn't figured out she can stand in it! haha....so the small tub keeps her seated which is great for me. I'll keep her in it till she's 20 if she still sits.

How about putting the whale tub in the big tub? My LO is still in the whale tub too
He's getting too big, but he loves it so we're in no rush to give it up till he really outgrows it. He's bathed in a big tub too, but it was actually harder because I had to hold on to him all the time!

@Mama Bird: that's what I was going to suggest. The whale tub inside the big one. That's how we always gave baths, until one day, the twins got too big for the small toddler tub so I let them bathe in the big tub.

My 15 month old just showers with me, it makes things so much more convenient because in her tub (inflatable Munchkin duck tub) she just wanted to stand up and climb out anyway, so she enjoys standing in the shower with me and I just give her a squirty toy to play with. This works especially well if you have a shower stall

we waited a long time too (that whale tub is too awesome!). we did ok with the transition to big tub - lots of toys and having a mat so it didn't feel slippery. she still kind of hates baths in general though.
lately we have been trying the shower - we have a big one in the master which helps. she seems much more into that, but I may miss using the tub when #2 is big enough they could bathe together. -
My 2-year-old is still in her tub. Not the little whale tub, we switched to a bigger tub, the Primo EuroBath. We both just felt like drawing a bath in the big tub was a waste of so much water. We moved our son from the whale tub to the Munchkin inflatable duck tub as soon as he was able to sit unassisted (around 4 months). That probaly lasted until he was about 6 months and he's been in the big tub ever since. I only fill it with a couple inches of water but he absolutely loves it. He goes from sitting to lying, from back to tummy and is rolling all over the place. I'd start with a small amount of water but you might be surprised how easily he makes the transition!
also another reason I've put off switching to the big tub, I need to get big bro done ASAP so I can get lil sis. I've never thought of bathing the little one first, maybe I'll try that!! Thanks!
