We try not to swear around LO, but naturally, we've failed some and LO has learned the F word. She called the cat a “f’ing jerk” the other day lol

So, our approach with the “lighter” swears like damnit are to completely ignore. With the F word, it’s been trickier because I laughed super hard the first time she said it so then it became a thing to say to get a reaction out of me. What’s mostly solved it for us is that I sat her down and told her it was a mean word and when you say it to someone you are being mean and saying a mean thing to them and that it hurts their feelings. That really made an impression on LO, so she doesn’t say it anymore, except on accident like calling the cat an f’ing jerk

The other day when I was giving Xander a bath, he kept saying "fucking." And I was like "What?? What are you saying??" And he just kept saying it, and finally added "Dada says 'fucking.'" I was finally like "Okay" and tried not to make a big deal of it or tell him not to say that and he dropped it. Just hope he doesn't say it at daycare!!

Heck isn't a swear word is it?? I say heck and hell and sod and bloody and allsorts in front of E and wouldn't bat an eyelid if she repeated them. DH has dropped a few Fs and c-bombs by mistake and I would be mortified if she repeated one of those!

DH blurted out the full version of WTF when he got DS1 up from a nap to find he had poop smeared and so DS went through a phase of saying it over and over again b/c he knew he would get a rise out of everyone. Well, at least from his daddy b/c DH has a hard time not laughing at it or just ignoring it. He doesn't say it much anymore but will from time to time. I just ignore.

LO had a massive shit on the floor the other week and I yelled HOLY CRAP and she incessantly repeated it over and over until bedtime. The more I reacted to it, the more it egged her on. I haven't mentioned it since and she's forgotten, but even saying "DON'T SAY THAT" just made her say it. Ignoring it made it go away.

Our LO said "dammit" after DH said it. We aren't sticklers with cussing ... It's a big conversation with many facets. I'd like to stop cussing around her as much as I can, but it's probably not entirely realistic. Plus, it's all about the thought behind the words.

I do not want her cursing though, so just like some tasks are for mom and dad, some words are for mom and dad. It won't be something we discipline her for, though.

Ugh, I am guilty of occasionally swearing around E, but DH is HORRIBLE about it, especially in the car. I remind DH several times a week to watch his mouth in front of the kid. So far E hasn't really repeated them, which is really surprising to me.

I sometimes pretend that she was trying to say a different word. "oh, fox? Yes, the fox is very pretty." Otherwise, i will say, "that's not a nice word" and not make a big deal out of it.

I have one hell of a potty mouth in real life so this has definitely come up with our 3 year old DS. Our approach is to tell him that certain words are "grown up words" and are not to be used by kids. He actually is pretty cool with that and when he says a word, we just remind him it is a "grown up word" and he moves on.

She asked me if her diaper was "a poop, or a crap poop?"
She's repeated 'bitch' when she heard it on TV but hasn't said it again since. And she'll say 'shoot' when she stubs her toe. Thankfully nothing has stuck around yet.

So far shit and dammit. We just ignore her and let her think it's not a big deal. I actually don't think it's a big deal. They aren't aimed at hurting anyone and they are used contextually.

I feel like the amount I swear increased tenfold after we had LO. Particularly in the newborn days. "Where the F is ____?!" and "Godd*amnit!" were staples around here.

I backed off on the swearing when our 18 month old started saying, "Uck! Uck!" and we knew for a certainty that she was not trying to say duck.

Like @torchwood, we won't make a big deal of it if she uses words contextually when she's older. She's only 21 months now, so we just want to make sure they aren't her first words to be used willy nilly.
