SC and all its delegates went to Trump, HRC barely squeaked by Bernie in Nevada.
A Trump nomination is looking more likely and I am terrified.

@Applesandbananas: I told my husband that we need to come up with a plan in case Trump does win the presidency. I'm really starting to worry.

@avivoca: same. I'm voting in the republican primary solely so I can vote against him and Cruz!

I was watching MSNBC last night and they were saying since its inception in 1980 the SC Republican primary winner has gone on to get the nomination except for in 2012. So if history is any indication then yeah I'm thinking it'll be Trump.

@avivoca: 74% of SC voters agreed with Trump's plan to ban Muslims, in an exit poll. I think this election is showing just how ugly our country is. I made a post on Facebook about how Trump is an entertainer, not a legitimate contender for the job of Commander in Chief, and certainly not someone we want to have access to the nuclear weapons... I was astonished by how many people were pro-Trump.
I do think it's comical though, that his support comes mostly from people without higher education.

It is terrifying. I cannot genuinely believe there are enough people out there who honestly believe he is qualified to run the country. If the way he handled the pope situation is any indicator of how he'll handle foreign leaders, especially of less friendly nations, then we might as well all start preparing for Armageddon now......
grapefruit / 4819 posts
@Applesandbananas: Spot on - it is showcasing the ugly, ugly side of America and it is humiliating to the rest of us (hopefully the majority?!) who do not think that way.

@lawbee11: you're quite politically savvy, do you have any insight into the concept of the contested convention? I was trying to follow a news report about this possibility that even if Trump wins the most delegates, he might not win the nomination? Do you know how that would work?
pomegranate / 3845 posts
@Ree723: agreed. I made a comment on the Team Pope thread to that effect. If he can't get along with the POPE, who is pretty much the nicest leader out there, how on earth is he going to deal with Putin or anyone else?!

@Hoots: I'm hoping this SC win and buzz that this could mean he wins the nomination drives the anti-Trump voters to the polls by the thousands. I know I'll be caucusing come hell or high water.

@Applesandbananas: Here's a good article about it: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/contested-republican-national-convention-work/story?id=37003821
From what I've heard/read it seems like it's only a possibility if one candidate doesn't get a majority of delegates. And with the way Trump is going that seems unlikely, but I guess still possible.

@Applesandbananas: Me too! I feel like either Sanders or Clinton are both sane and competent, so I'll do what I can to ensure the republican nominee is the same.

I am terrified that Trump is going to win the nomination, and possibly the presidency. I was watching the results come in from South Carolina and just shaking my head the whole time. I grew up just over the state line in North Carolina so I wasn't too surprised with the results, but I just don't understand why someone would vote for him at all.
I am a registered democrat. I am not a huge fan of Hillary's, but I think she would be a good president. I probably like Bernie more right now, but I would be happy with either Hillary or Bernie as the nominee.

I just feel like this has to be a big joke, right? The other thing is that I just worry about how Hillary OR Bernie would stack up to him in the head to head. I'm a Hillary supporter, but not by a landslide or anything. I just feel like personality wise, he would tear them apart in a head to head, and the masses will love it. Shudder.

I definitely think Trump is going to win the republican nomination. DH and I were talking about this last night. To start, I am thinking Trump won't win the presidential election. But, what I do think will happen, and will be interesting to see if this happens, but I think this election is going to bring out the largest voter turnout. If Trump wins the whole thing then I think it will be a true representation of what the people want. But we shall see.

@winniebee: I thought his candidacy was a big joke and it seemed like he was just trying to say the craziest things to turn off voters but instead, he amassed this following of nasty, hateful people and now that it seems likely he could pull it off, I think he's going to go for it. I just can't even.

I have a conspiracy theory. In the 90s, he was a fairly reasonable moderate Democrat. So my desperate hope is that if he gets elected, he'll suddenly go back to his real views and be this totally awesome, Progressive president.
I can hope!

I'm a republican but trump would not be my first choice by a long stretch...I really like Rubio.
However...DH and I talked at length about this last night and I think the problem w HRC vs Trump is 1) he will be ruthless with her and 2) I don't think she will pick up bernies anti establishment votes. Whereas trump has the anti establishment votes and will likely receive a good portion of those who just vote on party lines....
Would be interesting! All I can hope is that he gets a good vp...maybe even Rubio?!

I am so frustrated by this. It truly makes me angry that so many Republicans could view Trump as a good option. I am horrified. My vote doesn't matter at all in my state but I would be highly tempted to vote Democrat with the way it's looking should things continue down this path. And I say that as someone who doesn't agree with the majority of policies the Democratic candidates espouse - I just can't imagine Trump representing us on a foreign stage.

I'm trying to tell myself that a trump nomination could be a good thing. My mom is VERY conservative, but she's said she'll vote democrat if he's the nominee, just to keep him out of office. I don't think that's an uncommon response. So I'm trying to focus on that. She likes the other candidates, and honestly they scare me almost as much. I mean Cruz has said he thinks frakking Phil Ribertson would be a good UN ambassador.

@Applesandbananas: I live in Idaho. The state will go Republican and has a low electoral vote count anyways. The election is always decided before our polls even close most of the time.

@coopsmama: oh, okay. I used to live in Ohio and it was drilled into me that every vote counts sometimes I miss Ohio!!

@Applesandbananas: It drives me crazy that every vote doesn't count the same! I'm not a big fan of the electoral college, to say the least.
pomegranate / 3845 posts
@coopsmama: agreed. I feel like the popular vote should have more of an impact. I understand the design of the electoral college, but times have changed! I also feel like the primaries should be overhauled so that everyone votes on the same day and those votes also all should count the same instead of this super delegate stuff... This year's primary, admittedly, is the first I've paid that much attention to, but it all makes me so mad. Why does Iowa get to go first? And then New Hampshire, then South Carolina?
ETA - with Idaho having 4 electoral college votes, I can definitely understand your frustration!!!

@winniebee: I'm a Bernie supporter but I think HRC would do okay head to head with Trump. Bernie would get torn apart I think, which scares me. I really do think this has to be some joke or conspiracy!!!

The SC results leave me ashamed to be American. I just don't get how anyone their right mind could vote for Trump.

@Applesandbananas: probably if she lives in a predominantly Democrat/Republican state too--- I live in Washington for example- one side (where I live) is less populated but fairly Republican (so our Dem. votes mean jack in local stuff) but Seattle and Western WA are way more populated and are heavily Democrat. We practically always go Blue in elections

@coopsmama: as a former idahoan, I feel ya! Now, in montana, my vote might count, I was surprised at how close the state was to 50/50 in the 2012 election. I had assumed montana was another idaho.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@Applesandbananas: Right! I also don't understand why there are rules like that for the primaries and caucuses. It doesn't make sense. I'm sure there are reasons but it just doesn't seem fair that some states should seemingly have more input than others.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@OhCaptain: Oh I always think of Montana as being far more Democratic than Idaho. Far more! They have all those hippie college towns.

@BrandNewMom: My husband has this theory too. That he is some kind of Manchurian candidate and wants to swing left once he secures the votes.

I think there's a risk that Trump gets the nomination and then a wealthy Independent candidate - like Bloomberg - decides to enter and split the anti-Trump vote. Ugh...That's probably Trump's clearest path to the White House.
grapefruit / 4800 posts
While I think I'm moderate - small govt, balance bw corporate and governmental powers, tax burden are all interesting debates - republicans have built their platforms to also be xenophobic, anti-science, and big brother monitoring of 'family values'. Hopefully Trump is a wake up call to the party.

Anybody planning to join me in Cape Breton if Trump wins?
http://time.com/4230814/donald-trump-cape-breton-island/
The fact that this is a thing really points to his credibility on the international stage and how mch of a joke America will become if he's elected.

@Boogs: that definitely sounds like something he would say but it's not real.

This is becoming so terrifying and honestly makes me feel queasy. At so many times I've thought "This HAS to be the last straw! He's clearly nuts." But it never is
@Mrs. Pink: I'm in north eastern Oregon (you must be semi-close in WA?!) and it's the same story here. Our votes mean nothing in local elections, but at least I know we'll be blue thanks to the west side!
