I almost ALWAYS split the check evenly by the number of people, unless one person ordered way more or way less. Then that person would maybe not leave tip (or leave the tip) or something like that.

It is a major pet peeve of mine when people tally up what they ordered and only pay for that (not that I'm saying that you're annoying, just that it annoys me when I am out with people and I have to do that). Again, unless there's a significant price difference in what people are ordering ($50 entree vs. $12 salad as your main) then I just think it should be split evenly.

We always get separate cheques when we go out... That's one of the first questions servers around here ask : "Is this all on one bill or seperate?"

I voted split the check evenly, with my friends that is almost always how we do it. If one person ordered something way more expensive they will typically kick in more towards the tip but usually we just let it work itself out in the wash.

If I go out with my sisters though I usually pay for the whole bill. We never go anywhere pricey and financially I am in a far better place- plus they frequently host things in their homes but I am in from out of town so it is nice to be able to "host" or just say thanks. Likewise, if we stay with friends in another city we usually pick up the tab.

I always end up paying for more than what I consumed, so mostly, I ask for separate checks up front. If the waiter gives me attitude, I will simply reply that it will be easier at the end!

We were out seeing "A Christmas Carol" with about 15 people. We had DSS's with us who were 8 and 11 at the time. They had burgers ($6) everyone else ate and drank away!

Bill came and it was split evenly - that $6 burger was now $35! I was so pissed but DH just paid it

I guess because I am NOT a drinker I don't want to split the bill evenly - alcohol adds up fast and I'm not paying for someone else's drinks

We almost always split the bill evenly. The only time i would really match up who ate or drank what is if some of us drank wayyy more than another person. Otherwise we just split it. I use this great tip calculator app that tells you exactly how much each person owes.

We generally split it evenly...but if someone had something really expensive or drank wine when others didn't, they would usually put a little extra in to cover that.

With family we take it in turns to cover the whole bill, but not friends...unless it's like tea and cake or a couple glasses of wine only.

Separate bills usually!

We just ask for separate checks. I can't imagine sitting at the table and dividing up the bill... Seems like a waste of time! If we had to get one bill we would just split it evenly.

we usually just split it evenly. however with a situation like the one you mentioned, where some people don't drink and others have a few, we pay according to what we ordered. don't want to keep shafting the non-drinker.

It depends on who I am having dinner with. I have a few friends who we take turns paying the entire bill. With my other friends we split the bill evenly. However, I do have a good friend who likes to have her birthday dinners every year at some place fancy and she invites 20+ friends. Some of her friends I don't know very well so we always have separate checks at big events like this.

It depends what group of friends is out and the situation. I have a few groups that split evenly and a few that do the math and pay their own way. I kind of get burned splitting evenly b/c I don't tend to order steak and a lot of cocktails, but I factor that into the decision before going out now. There have been times I have paid $75 when I honestly ordered $20 worth of stuff!

We tend to split the bill evenly - but if I know I ordered something more expensive or drank more wine than everyone else I would voluntarily put more money down. The extra money then pays the tip, generally.

Depends on who we're out with. Most of the time, our close friends, we just take turns on picking up the whole tab. Other times we just split the bill evenly.

@Anagram: We are really good friends with a couple where the wife is sweet but her husband is so cheap. He is worse than frugal, just a cheapskate! We decided to meet up for dinner with their family (their 2 kids included) at a steak restaurant when we didn't have DD yet. His kids were 5 & 7 years old but he made his kids split a kid's meal, he ordered a chicken sandwich entree, and his wife ordered something more filling. I think she ordered steak and fries. He wanted everyone (his wife and kids) to drink the free iced water. The kids were still hungry so they ate off of their mom's plate. It was really uncomfortable to watch. When the bill came, my DH grabs it to pay the entire bill. The other guy bursts out loud "Awww man if I knew you were gonna pay, I would have ordered steak." We laughed so hard because it was so normal for him to say that but the night was a bit uncomfortable! We have not gone out to eat with them again. They do invite us to the kids' birthdays though. The wife is a super nice lady. He is just crazy cheap!
