I have no personal experience of my own, but one of my siblings had to have two surgeries to correct an extremely lazy eye. I hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does, it was a very quick and easy surgery, so you shouldn't be afraid of it!

DH has it (plus something else I can't remember the name of), as does most of his siblings. Both of his children from a prior marriage had it. DSD had one surgery and is fine; DSS had to have a few over the years to continue corrections. I'm not sure of the particulars of care that led up to the surgeries. I'm quite expecting E to have it and require surgery down the road. We've warned the peds to keep an eye out for it.

At our one month checkup the ped said that sometimes you can notice it in photos, when the flash hits the eyes and doesn't hit the pupils at the same spot in each eye.

Anyway, it really is okay, and they've done wonders with technology since DH had the surgery himself, and even the kids (10ish years ago).

My son had a bit of a wandering eye, but it resolved itself by the time he was 8 months.

My son was diagnosed with strabismus when he was about 13 months old - we did glasses and patching for a few months and then had a surgery in June of 2012. The first surgery actually made his eye wander out so we switched surgeons and had another corrective surgery done in November of 2012. We actually go back tomorrow for a checkin with the surgeon - he thought when we went a couple months ago that he may need one more surgery but at this point the eyes look really good cosmetically, so I think we'd be reticent to do a third surgery unless they could show that his brain wasn't processing images from both eyes or that it was affecting his eyesight.

We got the surgery done at Riley Children's in Indianapolis but got a second opinion at Children's in Chicago. Both agreed on the diagnosis and course of treatment. I know when we first got diagnosed it was really confusing and felt hard to deal with - easy to get worked up and upset about something so integral to normal daily life like eyesight!

Regarding the patching, we always did it first thing in the morning - I felt like getting it over with was the best and then he knew when to expect it. He goes to daycare so they'd do it there first thing in the AM and then at home we'd do it at the same time on the weekends. I felt like if we put it off all day then it was so much worse, he would throw a tantrum... it was all about him knowing what to expect - we get up, we do the eye patch & eat breakfast, and it's all done.

My DD had pseudostrabismus. My pediatrician wasn't concerned about her eyes, but my family (lots of doctors) kept bringing her eyes up to me so I took her to a pediatric ophthalmologist.
It was a pain and DD wasn't happy during the eval, but I'm glad we know for sure that her eyes are perfect.
