Happy news today is it looks like LO will be able to get into a pre-school around the corner from us! Hooray - and there are 3 other families on our street who have kids there too.
I got all excited about potentially carpooling until I realized kids are in car seats these days until they are what, 8?? How does that work with carpools and car seats? You can't have everyone with 3 car seats in the back, right?

@mediagirl: I mean in terms of car seats...? Do all parents just have to splurge on an extra car seat for the neighbor's kid, or what?

Some people have extra seats or you have to give them your seat!

@Andrea: But if they do drop-off in the morning, and you do pick-up, you can't possibly be installing and removing a massive convertible seat every day, can you? And leaving it at daycare, haha?

@Andrea: but if it's carpooling doesn't that mean that typically one parent will do the drop off and another will pick up? Then there are more issues with carseats!

At our old preschool, parents would drop off the car seat at the school for who ever was carpooling for pick up. Easier once LO's are in booster seats!
ETA: some always had extra car seats in their cars. Usually families with older LO's who outgrew their car seat.

@JoJoGirl: it gets easier when they are in the little boosters that aren't installed. When we take my nieces they just chuck the boosters in our car.

OMG that is SO high maintenance! I can understand if the kid is in a bucket seat and you buy an extra base.. but moving an entire convertible seat.. holy crap it's not worth it!
ETA at what age do they move to boosters? My LO just turned 2

@JoJoGirl: depends on the height and weight of the child but most kids in his class had one by 4 (DS is small so we waited longer).

This might not work if you're working up against time constraints but what if one family took a week and did drop off and pick up and then you swap? If you did like Wednesday to Tuesday or something you may be able to swing it so you work longer when it isn't your turn and less when it is or something like that.

I wonder the same thing. Unless you already have extra seats like as a travel seat it seems like a huge hassle. Once they are in booster seats I think there are pretty cheap and light ones that could probably be left at daycare- so four plus?

If the school is around the corner, it might be easier to just take LO yourself. Or could you get a double stroller with a buggy board and do a stroller pool?

I agree with @CakeLady: we are going to do a stroller pool with our neighbour, and it's a 15 minute walk to the school.

@JoJoGirl: My son is in a harness to booster seat (Graco Nautilus/Britax Frontier) and has been since the age of 3 when we decided to finally forward face him. I like the Britax Frontier with CLick Tight because it installs with a seat belt in a very easy way, so I would be okay with moving that seat around a bit.

Ok I feel like an idiot bc I am not getting this at all- can someone explain to me what the benefits are of a carpool?? I get that it makes sense if you drive a longer distance to save on gas, car wear and tear, etc...but I'm failing to see what the benefits are when it's such a short distance? Can come one enlighten me

Basically I have very early work hours (start at 7:30am) and our new local preschool doesn't open its doors until 8:30am and is a 30 minute commute from my office. My husband will normally do drop-off, and I will do pick-up, but on the days when he is out of town, or has a meeting, or can't do drop-off for some reason (which is pretty frequent), I need a backup plan to get her to school. Because there are literally 3 families within 100 yards of my house that go to the same preschool, it seems to make sense to pow-wow with them to drop her off sometimes, and I will pick their kid(s) up. Logistics are only a problem with the car seat!
The preschool is a little too far to walk comfortably on a weeknight when there are tons of other things to do (20-25 mins) - it's a 4 min drive.

@looch: Thanks!! That may work! She's been forward facing for a long time (super tall kid) so I'll look into it.

@JoJoGirl: thanks for clarifying! I was curious how this could be beneficial bc it seems like such a hassle! I guess what I still don't understand is even if you have to be to work early, you still would need to be at your house for when they came to pickup your LO, unless you drop your kid off that early at someone else's house? Then I can see it making sense...

@NovBaby1112: Yes, exactly - we'd be dropping her off next door to play for an hour or half hour or whatever, then get driven to school.

@looch: @JoJoGirl: We also have the Britax Frontier Click Tight. We have moved it easily from car to car as needed.
Edited to note about the Frontier: Additionally, the Britax Frontier requires use of a tether anchor when used in harness mode for a child weighing more than 65 pounds. For our friends in Canada, tether use is required on any forward facing harnessed seat.
