Firm and consistent with real consequences such as time out have gotten us through most rough patches. Even little slaps will teach them that hitting is ok, though... so I'd avoid that if you could

We started timeouts with our little guy at 1.

For food, I would definitely take the food away. My friend would turn her daughter around in the highchair.

We also did some natural consequences, such as making him pick up the food after throwing it.

@StbHisMrs: We are dealing with a lot of the same behavior. Right now she really doesn't understand consequences too well. If she throws or hits a toy, we will tell her no. If she does it again, we say no and redirect her, if she still goes back and does it a third time, the toy goes in time out. For us, the toy in "timeout" really just gets taken away since she doesn't understand timeout. We put the toy in a back bedroom and shut the door. She usually gets upset and then goes to play nicely with something else.

For the food, over the holidays my mom saw how bad it really was getting. We are going to try to feed her larger meals where she is really hungry. If she says she is all done then she will get down immediately. If she throws her plate she gets down immediately. We are also going to work on not letting her "beg" when she gets down. I swear she is worse than our dog about coming back up to us at the table and asking for more food.

Our Dr. Suggested starting time outs at 15 months. We started just a few days ago and I think she is already learning from it.

We had this at the same age. For food on the floor, we showed him how to clean up and he would help us pick up the food and throw it away in the trash. We also taught him that if he didn't want it, he was to hand it back to us. For throwing we were just firm and took toys away.
