DH is driving with BIL in a few weeks to Kentucky and back to pick up his girls to spend a few weeks up here. BIL's car has had some issues...and we think he's going to ask to take our car. NO flipping way.
Anyway, DH is going to tell him to go rent a car.
Any recommendations for a fuel efficient car suitable for 2 TALL drivers and 2 kids in the back?

We have a Hyundai Elantra, and it gets 38 mpg on the highway. It isn't huge, but it is definitely big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids.
How tall are your husband and BIL? Our friend, who is 6' 5", was a little cramped in the front passenger seat. DH is 6' and I am 5'6", and it fits us just fine.

Nissan Versa. It's what we drive and my mom (5'9") was super comfortable in the back. The hatchback is a lot roomier than the sedan.
P.s. I hope Kentucky treats them well.

I agree that the Versa is fuel efficient but actually really roomy for a compact car. I was more comfortable in that than in my full size sedan (which has really crappy legroom!!).

@locavore_mama: 5'11", but he's broad and we've taken long trips before. Lots of leg and head room.
