One of my former students (now in college) is asking me to help her choose an English name. Her old names never stuck and now she needs one that'll stick.
Her name is Yuah (pronounced: you-ah). What's a good English equivalent? Her college professor suggested Irene, but she doesn't seem too happy about it. I can't think of any names.

@Sweet T: Oooh, I'll add that to the list. So far I've got:
Cara, Ella, Olivia, Megan (she used Meggy before), Eva and Julia.
BTW, her name's Chinese characters mean "beautiful girl".

Hmm...finding a name that (1) most English speakers will be familiar with and (2) sounds like her name in her language seems kind of tricky.
Immediately I think of Eunah, Eunice, and Yvonne. Maybe Yolanda. However, all of these names have pretty strong ethnic associations (at least in my mind...maybe it's based on people I know with the names). And if she's going for an "American" name, it might make things more confusing.
Is the English name just to help English speakers say your student's name more easily? Because I don't think Yuah is hard to pronounce once it has been explained!
Could you ask her what the name means? Maybe she can focus on finding an English name with the same meaning rather than a similar sound.
ETA: Oops I missed that her name means beautiful girl. Maybe Bella, in that case?

@PinkElephant: I actually like her name as is, and when she was my student (as a 9th grader), she refused an English name entirely. I'm a little surprised she wants one now, although it's very popular and probably the norm to just have one? Idk. I know of a few ppl that has a one just for fun but then it sticks and they officially change it when they get naturalized.
What I can't believe is my old "children" are now in their 2nd yr of college!!! O_O

I love that 5 years later your student is still coming to you for advice. I can only hope that when I start teaching that I can leave a lasting impact like that. It says a lot about you and your dedication towards your students!

I don't think her name is all that difficult as is!!
that being said I do think Julia is pretty close.

I think Yuah is beautiful! I can't think of anything that hasn't already been mentioned, but Leah is my favourite so far.
