Did you attend summer camp as a child? Have your kids or will your kids attend summer camp?
I have never been to any sort of camp, but I read somewhere recently that it's maybe more of an East Coast thing? Is it regional type thing?

Like away camp? Never. Summer's were always for mandarin school. But DH did go to a few day camps, his mom was a SAHM.
Our kids will go to a mix of day camps during the summer since we both WOH FT.

We went to a few day camps (which were really only a half day long) that lasted a week or two during the summer. Never overnight summer camp for a week or anything.
I'm not sure what we will have our kids do. Definitely some day camps, but I'd be okay with overnight camp once they were in middle school.

I went to sleep away camp. Once was a week sponsored by Girl Scouts. Then I spent 2 years at a jewish sleep away camp. Both were in California.

Yes and I loved it! Every year from when I was 9 to when I was 14 I went to a sleep-away camp for a portion of the summer and a day camp for the other portion. I have such great memories from both camps, but especially the sleep-away camp. DH and I discussed it and it's definitely an experience I want our children to have.
Also, I'm on the west coast and there are plenty of camps here. I don't think it's a regional thing.

My daughter did a halfday science camp last summer in the northwest.
ETA: I did a sleep-away camp for 2 nights in sixth grade but not summer away.

Yes, my parents sent me to sleep away camp for a whole month after third grade! I went for shorter amounts of time for the next few years. I loved it. I was a pretty independent, fairly outgoing kid though. The camp was in northern Michigan.
If we can afford it when our girls are older, I would love to send them (if they are interested)!

@Meowkers: nope, although I know people who there! Instead I went to camp swig, which sadly no longer exists, in Saratoga.

I went to sleep away camp with my sister for 2 summers. The first was a Christian camp and the second was the Fresh Air Fund camp. We had loads of fun! We still sing camp songs. It was nice to go with my sister but be in different cabins.

I did sleep away camp for a month for 3 summers and I loved it!!! I was in middle school at the time. The camp was in NH. I definitely plan on sending my sons! did day camps before that.

I went to 3 different sleep away camps, each for 2 summers for 2-3 weeks at a time, in middle school/early high school. 2 were orchestra camps (yeah music geek!) and one was run by my town's ymca. 2 of them were in the midwest, and one of the music camps was in the northwest
I also went to day camp much more often
ETA my high school ex-boyfriend cheated on me while a counselor-in-training at a religious sleep away camp, so I am definitely biased against those and will have trouble sending lo to one, though dh went to a similar religious camp (not the same location but I think run by the same organization, lol) as well and loved it, so....we'll see!

I went to a sleep over camp in NH for two weeks every summer for 7 years. It was a wonderful experience for me and I really hope that my daughter will go to the same camp (she already has a t-shirt )

Totally. I went to church sleep away camps all the time as a kid. I'd love to let my LO's do the same!

I did all sorts of camps: day camps, Girl Scout camps, soccer camps, music camps, etc. most were sleep away. With two WOH parents they had to find stuff for me to do all summer.

Yes, I did a couple summers at sleep away camp as a kid and I met my husband when we were both camp counselors. Our kids will definitely spend summers there as soon as they're old enough and assuming we can afford it. We are still close with many camp friends!

I spent one week per summer at a Girl Scout camp from 1st grade - 9th. My parents always made it the same week my brother went to Boy Scout camp so they could catch a break. I loved it. I hope to send LOs.

Yes, sleep away camps are extremely popular on the East coast.
I went for 5 summers (for 4 weeks) to an all girls sleep away camp in Vermont. I loved it. I went from age 11-15.
I'll definitely consider sending my LOs to camp when they are older. My husband went to boyscout camps, but he doesn't get the "sending your kids away" idea. I felt extremely independent and appreciated my family even more after being away for them for 4 weeks.

I did not and I soooo wanted to.
I am on the fence with my son, truth be told.
