@Danizaur: I'm so so sorry you and T are going through this. I hate that he has to feel this way. It isn't fair that little babies should have to feel pain. I'm hoping that they come up with an answer for you very soon and can stop poking and prodding so he can rest comfortably.

@Danizaur: oh my gosh
I am so sorry you're on this rollercoaster. It is SO hard to see your little one poked and prodded and they don't understand why. My heart hurts for you and T.

I hope they figure out what's wrong very quickly & everyone can get some rest. There's nothing worse than seeing your baby hurting. I know you will get the best possible care.

@Danizaur: it must be heartbreaking watching T in so much distress but you will be bringing him so much comfort by being by his side. I hope they get to the bottom of it soon

@kentuckygirl: Yeah we are at UK. Thank you but I think we're set at the moment!!
They came in and woke him up at 11 to put an IV in. Why they had to wake a perfectly sleeping baby who has had a rough day to put in another needle RIGHT THIS SECOND I don't know. I'm sure in the morning I'll feel more logical about it but I'm currently pretty pissed and sad.
There's only a crib and a pull out couch for one in the room so DH and I are having to sleep in shifts, but T will only go back to sleep laying next to me so DH is really getting the short end of the stick

@Danizaur: Please know that you can make informed decisions and do not have to do anything RIGHT NOW (there are of course emergency exceptions). Talk to the nurse to see if the decisions the doctors made make practical sense to the nurse. Often the doctor pulling the trigger, especially the doctor on overnight, has less experience than the nurse. Good nurses will save the little sanity you are holding on to.
Also, have you asked the nurse or cleaning staff if there's a recliner they could bring in for your husband?

@Ms.Badger: Thank you. I wish I had stood my ground but I was half asleep and they were hovering over me asking me where I wanted them to do it. Yeah we asked when we got admitted and they said that this was all they had

@Danizaur: I'm so sorry you and your family have to go through this. Sending lots of positive thoughts to you and your LO. Maybe they can bring in more chairs and your DH can have a makeshift bed to lie on?

@Danizaur: I understand completely, it took awhile to understand the ways of the hospital, I hope that some of the things I learned can help you. Please, ask anything. You said you were at UK, I'm sure it's very similar to UCLA, being a university. You have my phone number on your wall if you'd like to text

@Danizaur: I hope you get some answers soon. In the meantime, you could maybe see if there's a hospital social worker you could talk with, as well. If they are any good they might be able to help you navigate some of the rights/responsibilities issues that come up. I can imagine it is an extremely challenging time to try to get your bearings and know what to ask for and what to expect. I hope that you find some staff members who can help make the experience less frightening and more comfortable for him. Also, I don't know if this would help or not, but Ellie uses something called a Buzzy when she gets shots (she is scared of needles). I know some hospitals have them on hand now for pediatric and even adult patients for pain management during blood draws, etc. You could maybe ask? You did a great thing recognizing that he needed medical attention.

@Ms.Badger: thank you so much!
@Mrs. Twine: I'll ask!! Thank you!

We went through this about two weeks ago - I'm so sorry it is happening to you too. They can't diagnose bacterial meningitis without a lumbar puncture (your dr wouldn't be sure from just looking at him), so fingers crossed it might not be meningitis at all! In my daughter's case, it was not in the end. Although she was horribly ill for five days, it was "just" a virus. We were terrified for awhile but she bounced back fast - today you'd never know anything happened. She laughed our loud for the first time the day after she was released.
Just wanted you to hear a story like yours with a happy ending. I know What you are going through is scary and awful so just know my family will be thinking of yours this weekend.
eTA: and yes! As mrs. Twine said, give yourself a huge hug for trusting your mama instincts that he needed medical care. Well done!

@Danizaur: I have a lot of experience at UK hospital and you are in good hands, but I also know how frustrating things can be with the wake-ups, etc. I can only imagine it is 100 times worse when they are waking up your sweet baby! Hang in there mama, you are amazing and the best advocate for T. Hope you all are getting some rest now. I only live about an hour away so I am happy to help if you need anything at all!

@Danizaur: +1 to @Ms.Badger: it's hard to find your voice, but you will. I remember when DS2 was in the ER the nurse mangled him up looking for an IV site until they finally called the NICU to do it, and I felt like crap since I just sat there and let it happen.
I also remember the back and forth (he has this! No, he doesn't?) To be so so frustrating. I assume you'll have rounds in the morning, make them include you and ask to explain acronyms or other things you don't know. Is it a teaching hospital? Ours was and I felt like rounds were mini tests for the new docs instead of informative for the parents, if you let them.
I hope they figure it out soon and he gets treated so you can go home. I'll be thinking about you and little T.

You are so strong Mama. You have gotten some excellent advice, but I wanted to say I agree with the others in that you are awesome and got your son the care he needed. I hope that the IV meds are making a difference and that everyone is sleeping now.

@kentuckygirl: I'm feeling much better about it this morning. I was just in a raw state last night. They're giving him antibiotics through the IV and he seems to be feeling better.
@beaker: They had a medical student with his doctor last night but we haven't seen her since so I'm not sure. Yeah when they tried to draw his blood they had to do it twice. It was hard to just watch him cry when they never even got it done.
DH and I shared the little sofa after T fell asleep last night and we put him in the crib. Surprisingly somewhat comfortable. His vitals were good at his 2am check. They're only going to do some antibiotics every 12 hours until the results come back.
